The individual selected for this position will provide assistance with various vegetable research programs and other research and demonstration projects both at the new AU Transformation Garden and Paterson Greenhouse Complex.This is a one year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Operation and maintenance of farm equipment in support of agricultural research; preparing field plots for planting selected vegetables; installing plastic mulch, drip-irrigation, and fertilizer injection; planting, maintaining, and harvesting horticultural crops; applying pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals; maintaining records and data from projects with accuracy to facilitate timely publications; and performing other duties as assigned. The individual selected for the position must be willing and able to work outside in Alabama weather conditions.

Minimum Skills and Abilities

Willingness and ability to work outdoors in Alabama weather conditions; Knowledge and/or experience with the calibration of equipment and sprayers; demonstrated technical excellence; ability to work independently and in a team environment; experience operating tractors and other farm related equipment; and knowledge and/or experience with pesticides are required.

Minimum Technology Skills

General experience in word processing and spreadsheet software.

Minimum License and Certifications

*A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment is required.

*Must have or be able to obtain pesticide license within six months of employment. Candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States by the employment date and continue working legally throughout the duration of employment.


Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include the following:

*Experience with general construction/minor repair work.
*Experience with SAS Programming or other statistical software.
*Experience with herbicide applications and safety.
*Experience in building, maintaining, and operating high tunnels and greenhouses.
