The Financial Aid Office at the University of Montana invites applications for two (2) Financial Aid Specialist II to join their team. Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Customer Care, these positions are responsible for administering the Federal Pell Grant program, various institutional scholarship programs, recording 3rd party funding, and various state aid programs, which primarily include state scholarships and waivers. Perform end of year reconciliation and reporting for these programs in the federal, state, and institutional systems, which requires extensive knowledge of policies, procedures, and federal and state regulations. These positions will serve as liaisons to UM departmental and off-campus agencies for scholarship administration. They will also evaluate files, which include verification of applicant data, analyzing need, awarding or revising aid, and using professional judgment to identify discrepant information and adjust in response to special circumstances.

These roles also require the incumbents to assist with general financial aid customer service, as well as, train and supervise one Administrative Associate II and one Financial Aid Specialist I.

Required Skills
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate complex policies to customers and staff
  • Proven experience in a supervisory role which involved training an employee
  • Must have good mathematical/accounting skills and have great attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and be able to have consistently positive interpersonal interactions with students, families, agency representatives, faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Ability to adjust quickly to changing job demands and maintain
  • Ability to be granted access to federal aid databases, meaning cannot be in default on any federal loans


Minimum Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of Financial Aid experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Position Details

Position Title: Financial Aid Specialist II

Position Number: 006450; 006510

Department: Financial Aid

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, 12 months/year.

Salary: $18.723/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and will minimally be this posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
