About the Opportunity:
The Academic Technologies (AT) team at Northeastern University (NU) is currently seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Assistant Director of Teaching & Learning with Technology. Reporting to the Director of Academic Technologies, the Assistant Director of Teaching & Learning with Technology is responsible for the direct advisement of faculty in the appropriate use of technology in teaching and learning. The role will work closely with faculty and direct AT staff members to help design and implement innovative technology services and solutions that advance the teaching and learning mission of NU.

This position is responsible for managing members of the AT team, and for providing input into the evolution of the learning technologies environment. Prioritization and goal setting will be essential to provide timely solutions for changing faculty pedagogical requirements. Collaboration across all areas of the Information Technology Services (ITS) division will be essential to effectively bring innovative teaching and learning technologies to scale across the NU global campus. Through effective collaboration and proactive outreach, the Assistant Director of Teaching & Learning with Technology will directly assist faculty and academic departments with curriculum development activities to ensure the seamless integration of technology into faculty courses.

A key area of collaboration and partnership for the AT team will be with the Research Computing (RC) team. Building on High Performance Computing (HPC) resources housed at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) and cloud computing engagements (Azure, AWS, IBM, GCP), the Assistant Director of Teaching & Learning with Technology will also work with the Assistant Director of RC to better integrate computational technologies into faculty courses for both existing (physics, chemistry, biology) and emerging (social sciences, data science, digital humanities) computationally intensive curriculum across the global Northeastern community.

This position will also work with faculty and university leadership, as well as partner with key members of both the Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning through Research (CATLR), the Northeastern Online-Experiential Learning (NUOEL), and the Self-Authored Integrated Learning (SAIL) teams. He or she will also participate and provide assistance with research proposals related to technology in pedagogical approaches to learning.

Responsibilities:
Support AVP of RAC and the Director of AT, including but not limited to: managing AT staff, coordinating campus-wide sponsored activities in service of academic computing, and aiding in the development of guidelines and policies that are amenable to the evolution of teaching and learning with technology.

Manage and oversee the development of innovative and effective teaching and learning technology services for a diverse community of learners and educators.

Partner with academic deans, faculty, and academic service leaders to develop coordinated technology programs and services for faculty and students across the university

Meet with key faculty, administration, and stakeholders to constantly identify and improve AT solutions and support efforts

Partner directly with the Center for Advanced Teaching and Learning Through Research (CATLR), Northeastern University Online Experiential Learning (NUOEL), and Self-Authored Integrated Learning (SAIL) teams to develop an innovative and holistic approach to integrating technology with teaching and learning across the global Northeastern community.

Supervise and direct the work of AT staff, setting goals, objectives, and communicating priorities while cultivating a deep knowledge of current and emerging trends, issues, and best practices in teaching and learning with technology

Oversee the AT graduate and undergraduate employment program that provides practice-based learning as it relates to technology, teaching and learning

Define and enhance methodologies and practices of service delivery in line with best practices and continuous process improvement through close interaction with the Customer Experience team within ITS.

Develop a strong group culture of respect, responsiveness, and mutual support of all areas of ITS, as well as faculty and staff of other University divisions.

Create a positive working environment conducive to success and results.

Remove roadblocks and drive cross-team collaboration across ITS.

Translate ITS strategy into practice through competency in teaching and learning technologies, IT business analysis, and planning, assessment and evaluation and IT service management.

In conjunction with the Director oversee budgeting, resource planning processes, and staff development programs within Academic Technology to ensure high-quality delivery of services.

Work to identify funding opportunities, e.g., grants, and to develop external partnerships that advance the positive and effective uses of technologies in higher education.

Develop new and creative ways to engage the user community through both documentation, as well as through in-person workshops and community events

Interface with senior management to develop a documentation strategy (e.g. user manuals, interface documentation, etc.)

Attend relevant conferences and workshops to stay up-to-date on trends in teaching and learning with technology.

Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology or related field.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of related experience
  • Experience with current communication, collaboration, and academic/media technologies
  • Experience with Learning Management System administration and support (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas)
  • Experience with educational tool interoperability and data exchange standards
  • Experience with lecture capture, assessment platforms, and survey technologies
  • Knowledge of instructional design methodologies
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards as they pertain to teaching and learning
  • Expertise in analytics and assessment of academic technology service effectiveness, impact on student success
  • Demonstrated record of developing and managing innovative and effective teaching and learning technology services for a diverse community of learners
  • An understanding of current and emerging technologies to advance collaboration, exploration, and discovery across academic disciplines, with significant experience leveraging these opportunities for practical and measurable gains in teaching and learning
  • Ability to set and effectively communicate a vision for academic technology that is aligned with university priorities
  • Ability to work collaboratively across all areas of ITS to support the effective development and maintenance of university-wide educational technology services
  • Demonstrated ability to continuously improve processes and customer support
  • Customer service driven approach, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, plan and implement project specifications, report project status, and identify delays or resource shortages.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate solutions by providing both technical and non-technical interpretations.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups across multiple disciplines, fostering collaborative relationships in the academic community.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and work with high functioning teams to provide timely build/response for a variety of technology projects.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project management experience in a higher education environment
  • Familiarity with ITIL frameworks
  • Experience overseeing a broad portfolio of teaching and research support services
  • Experience with digital and online learning support
