Coordinator, Step Ahead Program



Job Summary

The Coordinator, Step Ahead Program implements the vision of the Step Ahead Program. Recruits students for the summer program; serves as a liaison with Admissions, Financial Aid, and University Advising Services; plans for course needs, tutoring, and other program activities; hires and trains staff and peer mentors. Facilitates collaboration with campus partners and completes evaluation and analysis of the program.

Job Description

Coordinate the intake process for students admitted into the Step Ahead Program, including admissions marketing emails, tracking of accepted students, and completion of orientation and pre-registration activities.

Develop and maintain a coaching relationship, as well as programming opportunities for students who have participated in the program as they continue their enrollment at the University.

Coordinate and facilitate Step Ahead Program Planning Committee meetings, which include program administrators and staff, academic department representatives, Financial Aid, Undergraduate Admissions, and Advising.

Serve as a point of contact for prospective and admitted Step Ahead students and their families.

Partner with the appropriate academic departments and the Center for Academic Achievement to schedule Step Ahead Program courses and to ensure that courses have the correct designations, restrictions, and comments.

Serve as liaison with Financial Aid Office for the awarding of Step Ahead scholarships.

Work with Exploratory Advising to ensure that students are identified and registered for the appropriate Step Ahead courses.

Coordinate the IDS 2930 Step Ahead Success course, including assignment of instructors, development and maintenance of course content, and assessment.

Collaborate with the Center for Academic Achievement for academic coaching, supplemental instruction, tutoring, and writing consultation for the facilitation of the academic engagement activities.

Maintain regular communication with Step Ahead Program faculty and staff.

Oversee the Step Ahead Mentor Program, including hiring, training, monitoring, and assessing.

Develop evaluation materials; collect and collate assessment data from student participants, peer mentors and faculty.

Complete longitudinal data tracking for Step Ahead Program participants to aggregate retention and persistence data for University officials.

Analyze data for trends within each cohort and among cohorts to plan future programming and identify best practices.

Collaborate with campus partners to pursue opportunities to expand the Step Ahead Program to meet the changing needs of FGCU’s incoming students.

Other Duties

Implement academic support services that will increase retention and graduation rates of undergraduate students.

Provide individualized academic coaching to students in the program to promote the development of college success skills.

Guide students to attain their academic goals, increase knowledge, access campus resources, and facilitate holistic student development.

Assist in coordinating and delivering programs and services targeting students with academic holds.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Higher Education, College Student Development, Psychology, Counseling or closely related field.

Two years of full-time professional experience in higher education student services, academic support services, student success and retention, teaching college-level English or mathematics or other closely related area.

Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Experience operating personal computers with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook) software.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in educational leadership, student affairs, counselor education or related field.

Experience in program planning, development, and implementation.

Experience hiring, training and supervising student and/or professional staff.

Experience teaching English, mathematics, or English as a Second Language, at the college level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ( FERPA ).

Knowledge and understanding of student learning outcomes, and skill in designing and implementing valid tools to assess those outcomes.

Knowledge of learning theories and best practices in effective pedagogy, formative and summative assessment and educational learning theory.

Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook) applications.

Demonstrated knowledge of college admissions and ability to communicate process and procedures to students and their families.

Knowledge and ability to write proposals and letters, make presentations and speak to audiences.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.

Ability to follow the guidelines and regulations of the Step Ahead Program.

Ability to learn the requirements of the Step Ahead Program.

Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.

Ability to develop and maintain a professional working relationship with students in the programs, ensuring confidentiality.

Ability to develop and deliver training presentations and programs.

Ability to travel to required meetings or programs.

Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work when numerous and diverse demands are involved.

Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs.

Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.

Salary Range

$38,000 - $40,500
