The development specialist provides overall administrative support to the associate vice president for development and also acts as liaison between the associate vice president’s office (and the component teams that comprise Rice’s individual giving effort: annual gifts, major gifts, gift planning), and the communications, research, and constituent relations teams. This person is responsible for collaborating with the individual giving team support staff members in order to monitor team schedules, events, budgets, and reporting requirements as required by the associate vice president. The specialist will also plan and execute large meetings of the individual giving teams as well as oversee the preparation, distribution, and completion of individual giving team documents, reports, and presentations. The specialist will be responsible for acting as backup support to the offices of the vice president for Development and Alumni Relations and the principal gifts team, and may oversee special projects as assigned.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Education Preferred Experience Required 3 years Type of Experience

Related experience collaborating with a team of high level executives or managers with some experience in either of the following:
- Experience coordinating programs, events, or initiatives in a nonprofit organization
- Experience managing administrative operations or special projects

Substitution for Experience Requirement Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience Preferred

- Experience working at Rice or extensive knowledge of Rice
- Strong knowledge of Rice donor base
- Fundraising exposure in an educational/non-profit setting
- Experience using donor/fundraising databases software (Millennium, Blackbaud CRM )

License/Certification Required License/Certification Preferred Skills Required

- Self-starter with strong attention to detail
- Ability to establish and manage priorities and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines
- Exhibit professionalism and maintain confidentiality at all times
- Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness
- Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment, and decision-making skills
- Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Strong knowledge of relevant subject matter

Internal / External Contacts

Internal Contacts: The incumbent has frequent contact with all levels of faculty and administration, including the Office of the President, in person, in writing, and by telephone.

External Contacts: The incumbent has contact in person, in written correspondence, and by telephone with a variety of external constituents, including alumni and donors.

Essential Functions

- Leads the planning and operations for a department, function or program that may have significant business, regulatory and technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise

- Identifies issues, and develops alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures
- Reviews and analyzes trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the department, program or function
- Develops and implements outreach strategies that may include relationship development, communications and compliance
- Assesses training needs and may develop associated training
- Performs all other duties as assigned
