The Washington and Lee University Department of Music invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music position. This teacher-artist will give lessons to applied piano students and teach in a secondary area with preference given to those who are interested in music history survey courses. The person in this position may also teach the department’s music appreciation course, Introduction to Music. The appointment begins July 1, 2021.

Applicants should possess a significant record of solo and collaborative piano performance and a commitment to pursuing performance opportunities on and off-campus in addition to teaching. The department places a premium on good interpersonal skills and the ability to recruit student pianists. Service on university, college, and departmental committees is expected and other duties may be assigned.

W&L is ranked in the top ten liberal arts institutions. The Department of Music offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees as well as a minor in music. Students may also pursue teacher education endorsement in music education. Strong candidates should possess a doctorate in music or have completed one by the time of appointment. A demonstrable record of teaching excellence and a commitment to providing a high-quality music education in a liberal arts context are essential.
