The Latin American and Iberian Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer to serve as the DIRECTOR OF PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, preferably beginning in January 2021. The Department is a multidisciplinary unit composed of Latin American Studies, Translation Studies, and Literature and Cultural Studies. The unit includes a Language Program composed of Elementary and Intermediate Portuguese and Spanish courses.

We seek an academic professional with a strong vision and desire to lead in the innovation and transformation of the Portuguese and Spanish language curriculum. Our ideal colleague will have a passion for language-learning as an integral part of community-building and social justice and will thrive at UMass Boston, an urban, public university where heritage Portuguese and Spanish speakers make up an important portion of our student body. The selected candidate will demonstrate experience and capability to engage language students through creative pedagogies, for example drawing on art, media, music, or community-based learning. In their letters of application, applicants should discuss their commitment to move towards a content-based curricular design in all language courses and strong interest in exploring the integration of cultural competence into the language curriculum.

The Director will be in charge of all aspects of the language programs in Portuguese and Spanish, including curricular development, course preparation and management, supervising instructors, and some administrative tasks. The teaching duties are four language classes per academic year. This is a full-time, benefited position made on an academic year basis.

Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree, doctorate preferred, in an appropriate academic field. Native or near native proficiency in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Preference for Portuguese as a primary language of academic experience. Strong instructional technology skills.
