The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) seeks an experienced and accomplished leader to serve as Assistant Dean of Students for Engagement. The position is responsible for enhancing the academic education of students by measuring and assessing the overall impact of student engagement and developing programs and activities that strategically increase the number of students involved on-campus.  The Assistant Dean plays an integral role in the academic and professional development of students’ assets through a variety of high-impact experiences as well as broader visioning for the Student Engagement wing of the Division of Student Affairs. In order to be successful, the Assistant Dean will need to work collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Business Affairs and many offices throughout the University.


The position . . . .

  • Provides oversight, leadership and direct supervision of the Student Engagement and Leadership Center (student organizations, fraternity/sorority life, diversity/inclusion and leadership development programs), Student Media and Publications (student newspaper and magazine), Spirit Operations (cheer, dance and mascot programs) and Student Affairs Internal Marketing and Communications.
  • Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive plan for student engagement that is consistent with the university’s strategic plan and objectives, as well as the needs of the undergraduate and graduate student population.
  • Provides vision and leadership for campus-wide programming, event planning and leadership development that engage large numbers of students and incorporates best practices in student activities thereby increasing student satisfaction, retention and sense of belonging.
  • Creates and facilitates large-scale, institutional programs and activities and the development of new traditions and experiences that contribute to students’ pride in the institution.
  • Provides day-to-day management for all facets of student engagement services, programs, and activities that support transformative educational experiences and promote student recruitment, retention and graduation.


A successful candidate . . . .

  • Will have a strong record of proven success engaging large numbers of college students in events and activities and developing innovative programs that promote student success and a sense of belonging.
  • Will have a firm understanding of the value of assessment and how to use metrics to enhance the work of the department and the institution.
  • Will have in-depth knowledge and experience in planning strategically, creating student engagement opportunities, leadership development programs, inclusive programming and advising college/university student organizations.
  • Will have strong supervisory, success facilitating workshops, training staff, students and faculty as well as a proven ability to manage budgets and resources and partner with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Will have outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written, but more than that – an authenticity and confidence when communicating with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Will have a Master’s Degree and a minimum of seven years of proven student affairs work with progressive responsibility at a college or university as well as experience in decision-making, problem solving and the ability to work in a diverse environment.
