Substitute Teacher (Children's Center)



Position Purpose

This position will work with all childcare center teachers to create a warm and caring environment for young children meeting the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of each child. Key Accountabilities Supervises all activities indoors and out in order to ensure the safety and the well-being of each child. Respect for diversity of identities and experiences, an orientation toward equity and inclusion, and cultural competency in all aspects of Academy life. Communicates with parents regarding their childs activities during the day. Resolves problems or concerns that may arise with children or parents in conjunction with the teachers and Director. Assists in the maintenance of equipment and materials and ensures the cleanliness and orderliness of the classroom and common areas. Interacts with children in a warm, nurturing way while providing an appropriate adult role model. Models, articulates, and encourages cooperative behavior among the children. Changes diapers and clothing following center protocol. Degree of Independent Action Performed Incumbent works under the guidance of the Director of Harris Family Childrens Center and classroom teachers, but is expected to work with a high level of independence and autonomy, and exercise a high degree of initiative, influence, and judgment in decisions impacting staff and department operations. Expected to solve problems or address issues that require immediate attention.

Direct/Indirect Reports: None

Internal & External Contacts Frequent contact with students, Dean of Students office, PEA administrative and academic offices, faculty, coaches, and staff. External contacts may include parents, outside organizations, visitors and local community neighbors. Position Requirements Education Associates or Bachelors degree with at least nine credits in early childhood education/development preferred. Must have CPR and First Aid training or be willing to obtain certification.

Experience

Experience with infants, toddlers, and pre-school, kindergarten and/or elementary school age children required. At least 3 years experience working with infants and young children preferred. Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills. Demonstrated ability to work with students by building trust and credibility. Ability to multi-task and shift priorities frequently. Ability to teach in a team atmosphere with high energy, flexibility, and patience. Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations. Ability to communicate well with children, parents, and colleagues. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as a strong customer focus. A strict adherence to confidential policies is required. Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously. Proficient in MS Office. Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed. High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy. Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to serving the needs of a diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift children in carriers and push/pull heavy strollers and wagons as well as stoop, kneel, and crouch. Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs without assistance. Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example using a keyboard. Must be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks under stressful situations and able to function in a fast-paced environment. Communication skills using the spoken and written word. Ability to see with normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal range.

Additional Requirements

Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years). Clean Driving record (reviewed annually). Successfully complete a pre-employment physical/health screening examination, which may include a drug screening (position dependent).
