General Summary/Purpose

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic Instructional Technologist - Trainer to support digital pedagogy and the academic and professional development needs of SOM faculty members. Reporting to the Director of Online Education, the Instructional Technologist –Trainer will possess an in-depth understanding of instructional technology issues related to learning in online, hybrid/blended, and traditional courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop multimedia assets and learning materials. The Instructional Technologist will join a team that works collaboratively to support the teaching and learning mission of the University.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Conduct regular faculty trainings on instructional technology tools and services.
  • Maintain and improve upon the instructional technology infrastructure at SOM including the daily operation, use, and configuration of video streaming platforms, learning management systems, and relevant licenses for course production and delivery.
  • Provide 1st tier LMS user support (Blackboard and Docebo).
  • Assist with the design and delivery of online, hybrid, and face-to-face instructional technology/design training to staff.
  • Create user and other documentation as needed, including reference and job aids.
  • Support the design, creation, and revision of online learning and training materials, including multimedia assets.
  • Assist Instructional Designers and multimedia staff in developing supplemental, blended, and fully online courses adhering to organizational standards.
  • Provide instructional technology/design support to projects and personnel within the SOM.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Research and evaluate instructional technology resources and their effectiveness.
  • Work with the instructional designers and multimedia staff to pilot technology-based learning materials.
  • Support the Office of Online Education and senior leadership in the creation and management of course materials, including syllabi and assessment data.
  • Collaborate and consult with other distance education and instructional design and technology staff at Johns Hopkins and other universities.

Minimum Qualifications(Required)

Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field,

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in instructional/educational technology, including designing, developing, and managing technology-based instructional projects and assets.

Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by theJHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in related discipline a plus.

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented team player who can participate in collaborative instructional development processes and activities, is able to work independently, and has strong intellectual and analytical skills. Specific required and preferred knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Experience with training and staff development.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and create reports from data
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate, detailed written communication
  • Ability to manage and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an academic community.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative instructional development processes and activities.
  • Strong graphic and multimedia design skills.
  • Ability to produce professional digital media assets, including videos, audio, animation, screencasts, and podcasts based on client needs.
  • Experience with the Adobe suite and Final Cut Pro a plus.
  • Basic web skills including knowledge of HTML/HTML5.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (Blackboard preferred).
  • Understanding of pedagogical issues related to adult learning.
  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10lbs. or less.
  • Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30lbs. or less.
  • Ability to move about.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
