Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
-
Follows established protocols
and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or
experiments which MUST include: sterile cell culture, tumor cell
inoculation, fluorescent microscopy, small animal surgery and
perfusion, cryosectioning, and
immunohistochemistry.
May identify and resolve
common problems involved in routine cell culture and
histology.
Capable of exercising
independent judgment while participating in the planning of
experiments and evaluating and interpreting results; operates
appropriate laboratory equipment (e.g. cryostat, centrifuges, plate
readers).
Prepares and maintains
solutions, reagents, cell lines and stains following standard
laboratory procedures.
Monitors inventory levels,
orders materials and supplies in accordance with established
policies and procedures.
Operates lab computers for
data entry and maintains accurate data records.
Familiarity with the use of
ImageJ image analysis software, and other software applications,
such as MATLAB, statistical packages, and graphics packages to
assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports is
preferable, but not necessary.
Uses universal safety
precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous
materials.
Monitors biohazard/radiation
safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous
chemical agents.
Keeps current knowledge of
vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory
requirements.
Monitors equipment
performance and maintenance schedules.
May perform routine repair or
replacement of standard parts.

Bachelor’s degree in
biomedical engineering, biology, chemistry, physics or related
discipline.

Some related
post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
Although experience in a
comparable laboratory performing animal surgery etc. is preferable,
candidates without prior experience and the requisite background
will also be considered.
Physical Requirements:
- Work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.
- Biohazardous conditions such as the risk of exposure, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals may be present in this work environment which mandate attention to safety.
- Near vision to see objects clearly within 20 inches. Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes.
- Full spectrum vision to identify and distinguish color.
- Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using microsurgical instruments.
- Handling by seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with the hands.
- Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 10 lbs. or less.
- Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 30 lbs. or less.
- Ability to move about.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
