The Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center invites applications for an anesthesiologist expert in simulation and patient safety to direct its Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center; rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's academic record. The department has more than 200 MD and PhD faculty, over 100 residents and fellows, and each year hosts a full class of medical students (approx.125). The Center is internationally-recognized and uniquely comprised of an interdisciplinary, inter-professional team of physicians, nurses, educators and human factors engineers who focus on health care education, safety, quality, and research, and is cited as a 21st Century model for improving patient safety and quality. The Director leads and coordinates the integration, implementation, and evaluation of simulation in education and patient safety, facilitates the development of inter-professional simulation, and engages in activities that further the simulation enterprise. This person will work closely with the Vice Chair of Education, the Residency Program Director, and other education leaders to innovate, investigate, and develop new knowledge, while maintaining the highest standards of simulation education for our faculty, trainees, and medical students. The ideal MD candidate will have an evident commitment to scholarly activity in simulation and patient safety, including grant funding. The Department of Anesthesiology offers a competitive compensation plan that includes comprehensive benefits and rewards academic excellence with protected time for the Director role.
