Bowdoin College Department of Education invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow to join Assistant Professor Alison Riley Miller on an NSF -funded collaborative research project with colleagues from The Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Vanderbilt University. Over three years, the project, Developing a Modeling Orientation to Science ( DMOS ): Teaching and Learning Variability and Change in Ecosystems ( NSF #2010155) will investigate two interrelated strands of research with the primary goal of providing evidence regarding the learning environments, tools, and teacher professional learning experiences that support the development of students’ and teachers’ practices and conceptions of modeling as envisioned in the Next Generation Science Standards ( NGSS ).
Applicants must have received, or anticipate receiving, their PhD by December 20, 2020, and those who expect to receive their PhD by December 20, 2020 should provide documentation from their home institution confirming this schedule.
Preference will be given to applicants who hold a doctorate in Science Education, Learning Sciences, Research Methods and Evaluation, or a closely related field.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
Applicants must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in educational research and scholarly writing, must have experience working with teachers and students in educational settings, and must demonstrate competency with both qualitative and quantitative methods for data analysis. Preference will be given to
candidates with background in teaching and learning (with particular emphasis on
grades 5-8), model-based reasoning, and/or teacher professional development.

Standard Work Days and Hours
Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.
This is a three-year appointment, starting as soon as November 1, 2020.
