The Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Bayview is seeking aPsychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP). This position requires diverse administrative leadership, educational and clinical skills. In addition to providing independent direct inpatient consultation in the specialty area of Psychiatry and Addiction, it also includes the administration, coordination, and oversight of behavioral health services delivered on the acute inpatient medical and surgical units, including the 5 specialty ICU’s of the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

The position serves as the lead team member on the expanded Behavioral Health acute inpatient consultation Team or BHT (formerly known as the Psychiatry Consultation and Liaison Service). Additional duties also include education, supervision and training of 1) nurse practitioner students, 2) physician assistant students, 3) medical students and residents who rotate on the service.

The position reports to the Attending Physician/Director of the BHT team, and the Director of Nursing for the Department of Psychiatry.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Work as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and a lead team member of the BHT, coordinating and ensuring the effective delivery of services by the multidisciplinary and multispecialty expanded BHT. In addition to receiving consultation requests, this position will ensure coordination and oversight of the seamless functioning of the multidisciplinary members of the BHT in response to consult requests, and communicating with house staff and attendings regarding consultation questions.

This position requires independent clinical functioning in the subspecialty of Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry. This entails direct clinical examination of patients (both medically and psychiatrically), collecting collateral information from the medical record, outside informants and the primary medical teams, formulating diagnosis and treatment plans, writing completed evaluations in the electronic medical record, communicating recommendations to the requesting team, and providing ongoing psychiatric treatment planning for patients with psychiatric or behavioral symptoms who are admitted to the hospital or in the Emergency Department. Support, education and coordination is also offered to nursing staff on the inpatient floors, case managers and social work members of the team on a case by case basis for particularly complex patient needs.

Additional duties include the formal education, training, and clinical supervision of students from multiple disciplines who rotate on the BHT as outlined below.

Consultations will be completed for patients of all ages who are experiencing psychiatric disorders or medical conditions that may cause behavioral problems or psychiatric disturbances. This role will also require obtaining second opinions from the Attending Physician/Consult Director/Addiction Medicine Faculty as indicated by clinical need in each case. The Attending Physician/Consult Director and the Nursing Director in a matrix management structure supervise the position both formally and informally.

Essential job functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the oversight of the provision of services on the expanded Behavioral Health Team (BHT),
  • Administration and coordination of psychiatric services delivered by overseeing accurate data collection/monitoring of discharge planning processes to support decrease length of stay and appropriate disposition to the next level of care,
  • Coordination of the ongoing education for other members of the healthcare team to support the safe management of patients with acute behavioral health needs,
  • Provision of direct medical and psychiatric evaluation, medication management and psychotherapeutic interventions,
  • Referral and facilitation of transition to appropriate levels of care for patients following hospital admission,
  • Appropriate documentation of services provided,
  • Submission of billing sheets for professional fee reimbursement, and
  • Participation in rounds, required meetings and committees, and
  • Education, training and direct clinical supervision of NP, PA, medical student trainees and resident physicians rotating on the BHT.

Schedule of work will include weekdays.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse licensed and CRNP-PMH Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner – Psych Mental Health required. Must be licensed as CRNP-PMH in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Active NPI Number and Medicare/Medicaid provider required. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH and BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency: Additional experience may substitute for master's degree.

Preferred Qualifications:At least two years relevant work experience.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent diagnostic skills, as well as skills in ongoing clinical management of patients. Additionally, administrative leadership and experience as an educator for diverse disciplines is required for this position. Desktop PC and/or laptop computer or tablet, facsimile, photocopier, telephone, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, and other equipment necessary for thorough evaluation. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); proficiency in typing, as all patient notes are typed; ability to learn EPIC for medical record documentation.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
