Assistant Professor of Spanish
The Washington and Lee University Department of Romance Languages invites applications for a tenure-track position in Golden-Age Spanish literature at the rank of assistant professor. We seek a candidate with teaching and scholarly interests in the canonical writers of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and also able to connect that literary culture to the implications of empire, including the response in the Americas to the imposition of cultural norms and political will on local populations, including indigenous and enslaved peoples, as well as colonists. The appointment begins July 1, 2021. Candidates should be prepared to teach language courses, introductory courses on literature and culture, and advanced courses in their field of specialization. Candidates should also be prepared to contribute to the university’s Latin American and Caribbean Studies and/or Medieval-Renaissance Studies programs, and to lead study abroad programs.

Washington and Lee is a highly selective, independent, co-educational, highly ranked, liberal arts college of approximately 1850 undergraduate and 400 law students located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Candidates will exhibit native or near-native fluency in Spanish and hold a PhD in Spanish literature at the time of appointment. Candidates will also demonstrate excellence in teaching and promise in scholarly research.
