Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Career Coach to join our Career Services team. The Career Coach will facilitate and support development of progressive career development and management strategies through the planning and implementation of innovative coaching, programming, and resources for current students and alumni. S/he provides comprehensive career coaching to individuals and in a group setting, ensuring consistency in office’s brand, content, and messaging. The Career Coach is committed to maintaining a culture of superior customer service to support a diverse population and serves as a career specialist across multiple academic disciplines. S/he consistently monitors, evaluates, and recommends changes for improvement to functional operations to better meet organizational needs & objectives. Reporting to the associate director of career development education and programming, data analytics, and marketing, the Career Coach supports the associate director and director in developing and implementing the department’s strategic plan, collecting accurate data for student engagement, and creates reports to reflect efforts, connections, and engagement. The Career Coach will develop tools and resources to increase scale of services, provide creative and timely promotion to students to increase participation in career development activities, and promote a career culture throughout campus. S/he will form, maintain, and strengthen relationships across campus that are critical to the office’s success in supporting the university strategic plan.

Essential Job Functions

  • Career Coaching (60%)
    • Provide comprehensive, individualized career coaching to students and alumni at various levels of professional and industry experience, to help them define their short-and -long term career objectives, develop effective job search skills, and provide strategies and tools to achieve their career goals.
    • Oversee Peer Coaching Program, including hiring and training Peer Coaches.
    • Interview, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate Peer Coaches
    • Consistently evaluate and modify Peer Coaching Program services and resources.
    • Become a subject matter expert to provide guidance in the following areas: effective job search strategies, resumes, cover letters, interview and networking skills, Handshake & LinkedIn profiles, offer management, salary negotiations, professional communication, and graduate school applications.
    • Develop user expertise in the utilization of online career development resources: Website, Handshake, LinkedIn, Big Interview, etc.
    • Maintain awareness of career development needs of specific student/alumni populations, and create and present related career development coaching and resources.
    • Develop and present unique and targeted programs and workshops to students in classroom settings, residence halls, and student organizations.
    • Maintain industry knowledge of potential career paths related to each major.
    • Maintain knowledge of current recruiting practices and timelines as related to specific majors.
    • Research peer, competitor, and innovative coaching, programming, and resources to enhance and improve availability and delivery of services.
    • Research peer and career center industry developments regarding technology and recommends changes and enhancements to increase positive career development impact for students and alumni.
  • Career Development Resource Creation & Utilization (20%)
    • Develop web and text instructional and support guides and examples to support career coaching and the utilization of online tools.
    • Consistently evaluate and update all handouts, guides, and web-based resources.
  • Student Outreach and Promotion (15%)
    • Create and implement effective marketing strategies for department, career development programming, and on-campus recruiting events.
    • Proactively develop partnerships within academic departments, Student Life, and student organizations.
  • Other (5%)
    • Collects and analyzes student/alumni engagement data, and prepares statistical, analytical, and narrative reports to assist in the analysis of coaching and program effectiveness, as well as used to establish future direction of services.
    • Actively participates in planning, management, and execution of Career Fairs and other on-campus recruiting and career development related events.
    • As a team member, provides exemplary customer service in student/alumni centered office operations.
    • Research best practices, peer institutions, and market/economic conditions to recommend creative and innovative changes and enhancements to improve operational and administrative effectiveness, processes, services, and/or resources.
    • Represent the university and participate in local, regional, and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards, recruiting trends, share best practices, and increase the collaborative culture, visibility, and reputation of office.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate on university committees, including performing assigned committee work.
  • Maintain knowledge and credentialing as appropriate for professional practice.
  • Be willing to work flexible, extended hours and to travel.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with and/or experience working in Higher Education required.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and report data using technology required.
  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced skills in computer software including Microsoft Office; MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and/or Access required.
  • Experience working in Career Center and knowledge of current issues and trends impacting career services industry preferred.
  • Experience advising diverse groups of students and alumni preferred.
  • Knowledge of Career Services specific software, such as Handshake, Career Fair Plus, Big Interview, uConnect website platform, and insight into emerging technology resources preferred.
  • High ethical standards and demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Current knowledge of economic, employment trends, and corporate recruiting practices and timelines.
  • Strong customer service focus for both internal and external constituents.
  • Comfortable using confident and assertive outreach and marketing techniques.

 

 

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before others. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form.

 

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.

 

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus to attend meetings/events and access files or information.
  • This role does require occasional carrying/ lifting 20+ lbs for event materials (carts are typically available to assist with these tasks.

 

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • Must be flexible to work nontraditional work hours including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional travel.
