Position Summary:
The Research Specialist will assist the Principal Investigator with research and extension activities conducted within the north Idaho cropping systems agronomy program, which includes conducting regional variety evaluations for cereal and legume crops. Job duties will include collaborating with the Principal Investigator to plan and conduct field and greenhouse trials, collecting and analyzing data using statistical software, preparing research reports, and occasionally presenting results at local and regional meetings. Additional duties will include contributing ideas for general plan of the research and extension program, preparing written and oral reports, contributing to refereed journal articles, training and supervision of hourly employees, and assisting graduate students with projects. Regional travel will be required to maintain and evaluate trials.


Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree and two years of post-bachelor’s research experience relevant to the duties of this position.
• Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully pass a driver’s record check.
• Applicants must have or be able to obtain an Idaho commercial pesticide applicator license within two months of hiring date.


Preferred Qualifications:
• M.S. in Plant Science or closely related field.
• Experience in agronomic research, small field plot trial experience, data collection from field trials.
• Experience operating small plot farm equipment, calibration of pesticide application equipment, ability to tow and back trailers, and make minor repairs to machinery.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrated technical skills, effective written communications skills, and demonstrated skill with computers.
• Experience supervising staff and students.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems and work effectively in a team setting.
• Experience with website design, deliver presentations to growers and other crop production clientele, and prepare journal article or similar publications.
• Experience using computer software and applications for word processing, email, internet searches and data organization.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
• May be required to work with toxic, volatile and corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances.
• May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions (dusty, hot, or cold conditions outdoors).
• Must be able to lift, carry and/or otherwise move objects up to 50 lbs.
• Willingness to travel within northern Idaho and neighboring regions as well as working extra hours when required.
