Lawrence University of Wisconsin, a selective undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton, Wisconsin, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biochemistry to begin September 1, 2021. This person will join faculty in the Chemistry department and interdisciplinary Biochemistry (major/ minor) program.
We are seeking an individual who is a dedicated teacher passionate
about working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts
setting, an active and engaging scholar, and an effective mentor
for students from diverse backgrounds.
The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in
biochemistry, playing an instrumental role in developing curricula
for our Chemistry and Biochemistry programs. Primary teaching
duties include: teaching, assessment of student work, advising and
mentoring students, collaborating with faculty on curriculum
development, and related program/departmental and institutional
duties. The teaching load is two courses per term (or one course
for a course that includes two lab sections) for three ten-week
terms a year, including participation in Lawrence’s flagship
Freshman Studies program approximately every third year. The
Freshman Studies curriculum presents an interdisciplinary
introduction to the liberal arts intended to support new students’
fundamental skills as readers, writers, and thinkers.
Candidates must have the ability and desire to lead an independent
undergraduate research program, and otherwise, connect scholarship
with teaching. Laboratory space and start-up funds are available
for establishing a research program. Candidates’ research can be in
any broad category of biochemistry. In their research statement,
candidates are encouraged to discuss how their scholarship may be
particularly suited to an undergraduate setting, and how prior
experience, such as postdoctoral work, has informed and prepared
the candidate for a research program at Lawrence.
Candidates must have a PhD in biochemistry or closely related field
at the time of appointment (09/01/2021), but may be all but
dissertation at the time of selection. To apply submit the
following at https://lawrence.peopleadmin.com:
(1) a letter explaining your interest in Lawrence and describing
ways you can help Lawrence become more inclusive, (2) a curriculum
vitae, (3) statements on teaching, research, and diversity (as a
single PDF document), and (4) three letters of
recommendation (two of which address the candidates ability to
teach and mentor students). In their teaching statement, candidates
are should address their commitment to fostering a truly engaged
and supportive experience for a diverse community of learners.
Applications will be evaluated starting October 15th, 2020, and
will continue until the position is filled.
Lawrence is committed to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and
staff. We encourage applications from individuals who will help us
create a more inclusive Lawrence by: (1) further diversifying the
faculty and/or (2) demonstrating experience with successful
diversity-related initiatives, creative activity, or research; and
(3) showing interest in developing inclusive pedagogy to address
the needs of a diverse student body.
