The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion, or the Center as known on campus, represents the importance and influence of equity and inclusive excellence in every aspect of the Carnegie Mellon student experience. We are a team oriented unit, with dual reporting lines to the Division of Student Affairs and the Vice Provost for Education, and affect the student experience by cultivating cultural engagement, fostering a sense of belonging, and challenging systems of privilege and oppression. We work to continuously support the success of historically underrepresented student populations through developing community, active mentorship, and personal empowerment; all while collaborating with students, staff, faculty, and alumni to develop creative programs designed to increase and advance individual and collective intercultural competency development.

We are seeking a bold, creative and upbeat leader with a passion for this work and a student-centered record of progressive leadership to fill the role of Director of Student Programs and Engagement. In this role, you will lead the operations, programs, and direct student engagement of The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion (“The Center”). You will lead a team of 4 full time staff and reports to the Associate Dean and Executive Director.


Core responsibilities include:

  • Leading all aspects of the administrative and programmatic elements of the Center, including supervision/professional development of Center staff, program planning and work assignment, budget stewardship, and management of day to day operations in The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion
  • Designing and implementing programs related to access, success, and intergroup engagement with the support of Center staff team
  • Designing and implementing robust communication and marketing strategies to connect Pittsburgh community, faculty/staff, donor, and alumni to the life of the Center
  • Coordinating, under the direction of the Associate Dean and Executive Director, the Center response and student support during critical incident moments on campus or in broader global community
  • Designing and implementing formative and summative assessment program under the leadership of the Associate Dean and Executive Director to measure and report on impact of Center programs on underrepresented students and campus climate
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Master’s degree in related field required.
  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive leadership experience in field of higher education related to advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives. 10 years proven experience preferred
  • Knowledge of national trends associated with the LGBTQA+ community and other historically underrepresented student populations with a working knowledge of those trends in higher education is highly desired.
  • Experience with fund development, donor relations, and alumni engagement at the undergraduate and graduate level preferred
  • Experience with alumni engagement in undergraduate and/or graduate support
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level is valued

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience in diversity infrastructures with a steadfast dedication to equity, justice, and inclusion
  • Strong understanding of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion, multiculturalism concepts and issues, especially as they apply to higher education (recruitment and retention, access, equity and diversity in the curriculum, the educational impact of diversity, policy and legal dynamics of diversity, etc.);
  • Demonstrated success related to leadership, supervision and, financial management with proven ability for strategic planning, campus programming, and community development to accentuate evidence-based standard methodologies related to equity, justice, inclusion, and cross-cultural competencies
  • Advanced skill in staff development and performance management
  • Experience with summative and formative program assessment, including demonstrating data to impact program development and organizational change
  • Successful track record of leading projects in a multi-stakeholder environment as an innovative and inspirational change agent
  • Advanced interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Ability to facilitate presentations and address large campus and community audiences
