Position Title Assistant Dean/Director of Multicultural Student Success Overview

Direct the College’s efforts, in support of its strategic goals pertaining to diversity and academic excellence, and provide leadership and expertise to support the academic success and full participation of multicultural, first generation, and low-income students. Provide additional support and guidance for undocumented, DACA, and TPS student populations at the College.

Essential Duties:

1. Direct and facilitate academic advising and mentoring of (primarily) multicultural, first generation, and low-income students with the goal of facilitating their full participation into the academic life of the College. Collaborate with various offices (including Academic Services, Center for Engaged Learning, academic departments and programs, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Career Education, etc.) to facilitate mentoring relationships between students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Provide students with referrals for services and resources as appropriate. Work closely with the undocumented student advisor to help the academic, social, and emotional success of undocumented, DACA, and TPS students. Collaborate with the Director/Assistant Director of Academic Advising to create advising workshops for diverse populations to faculty and staff through Academic Advising to help address specific student programming needs in the following areas: academic advising, course planning, academic ownership, self-advocacy, and other topics as needed.

2. Create and foster a learning community of scholars within the Multicultural Scholarship Program ( MSP ); steward the resources allocated for the MSP ; foster the development and monitor the progress of the MSP recipients, and oversee their compliance with the conditions of their scholarship agreements. Facilitate mentoring relationships for and among MSP students. Host regular programming to help MSP students build their academic and leadership potential in the classroom and on campus.

3. Collaborate with Student Multicultural Activities, and Cultural Programming, Academic Affairs, and Institutional Diversity with the coordination of the College’s Transitions Program for incoming multicultural and first-generation college students with the goal of helping these students integrate into the broader campus community. Collaborate and assist on summer bridge (Friar Foundations Program) and other transitional programs. Help with the coordination of efforts to integrate other pre-orientation programs to help reduce segregation of the student body community through service-learning efforts. Assist with the development and coordination of joint programming, training for student leaders, and service-learning opportunities for participants.

4. Work closely with Financial Aid, Phillips Memorial Library, and the bookstore to manage and provide monies from Balfour and Thomas Rapoza Book Programs. Work with Financial Aid to award stipends through the program to eligible students based on established policies and procedures. Work with the School Deans and Institutional Diversity in securing additional funding for book stipends for all low-income students.

5. Collaborate with all divisions in the development of the College’s Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation Celebration, the program that celebrates the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship program, highlighting student, faculty, and staff contributions to the Strategic Plan for Diversity. Assume a leadership role as appropriate. Collaborate on the development of the week-long programming, which includes the MLK Day of Service, Student Celebration, Candlelight Vigil, Convocation, and collaboration with the Humanities Forum.

6. Communicate with faculty about the academic progress of the scholars to identify areas of strengths and needs and provide individualized services, resources, and opportunities to increase their academic engagement and success. Assist colleagues in the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies in advising undergraduate students when needed.

Marginal Duties:

1. Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required

• Master’s degree in counseling, education, or related field required from an accredited institution.
• Five to seven years’ experience in academic advising or counseling in a college or university or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Experience advising and developing comprehensive programs for students of diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and international backgrounds to persevere and matriculate successfully.
• Evidence of collaboration across department or program boundaries.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to actively listen
• Ability to interact and cooperate with colleagues, other departments, and students
• General budgetary experience
• Proficiency with office productivity and other technologies as needed for this position.
