Duties:  The Department of English and Fine Arts at The United States Air Force Academy invites applications for a teaching position in our small, yet vibrant Fine Arts (Music & Creative Arts) program beginning 8 June 2021. Applicants must hold a terminal degree in one of two categories:  1) Musicology (music appreciation/history); or 2) Creative/Applied Arts with expertise in interactive media, and/or integrated media, with a strong background in digital technology. We are especially interested in candidates whose work is inherently interdisciplinary and fosters collaboration among the arts through digital practices and pedagogy. The most successful candidates will possess requisite expertise and experience to teach in their credentialed field and humanities courses. USAFA’s interdisciplinary Fine Arts and Humanities offerings may include, but are not limited to the following potential courses: Studio Art, Photography, Music & Culture, Music Appreciation, Music History, Multi-Media & Computer Art, Film Making, Fine Art Videography, and the study of other fine arts supporting the humanities.

Qualifications:  Applicants must possess a terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in either Musicology or Creative Arts and/or a related field. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae and a cover letter.  Cover letters should consider the role of the fine arts within the framework of a liberal education geared to the formation of ethically-minded officer candidates. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence and innovation in undergraduate teaching. Of special interest are candidates who can contribute to further developing the department's Fine Arts program with innovative approaches and/or 21st century technology. Applicants should submit evidence of teaching effectiveness as well as three letters of recommendation.

About USAFA:  The United States Air Force Academy, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead in the United States Air Force, Space Force, and in service to our nation.  Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute to this mission by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors.  The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators.  The student body consists of approximately 4,000 men and women representing every state and several foreign countries.  The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 28 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors. Essential qualities expected of every faculty member include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.

The USAF Academy does not offer tenure. Initial faculty appointments are for 3 years. At the end of the second year, the original appointment may be extended for an additional 3 years (6 years total) with the possibility of successive extensions. This appointment system provides long-term employment stability for reappointment-eligible faculty with extensions occurring with at least 3 years remaining on a current appointment.  Extensions are based on an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and financial constraints. Historically, 95% of eligible faculty are extended, and the average length of time on faculty for those currently serving in this system exceeds 12 years.
