About the Opportunity:
The Office of Financial Planning, Strategy, and Analytics seeks a financial operations analyst to monitor and forecast unit budgets, inform long-range planning, measure administrative performance, and improve operational efficiency in support of advancing the academic plan known as Northeastern 2025. The financial operations analyst will implement an array of financial, mathematical, statistical, modeling, programming, and visualization techniques to convert financial and administrative data into actionable insights and options for management.

Responsibilities:
Northeastern University employs two budget models. One is a high-level budget which looks at total revenue & total expense and tracks financial performance at the highest level of aggregation. This management report is used regularly to assess university financial performance and is a vital management tool. The second model is a Responsibility Center Management-based budget which evaluates unit performance at a much more granular level. These two models are linked (and must tie) to each other, but are different in significant ways. The employee also supports a portfolio of colleges and operating units in their annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting efforts. This position will play a role in developing the annual university operating budget. The employee will develop reports and evaluate data crucial to the appropriate oversight of university financial results, and will assist financial managers around the university in resolving financial issues as they arise. The incumbent is in frequent contact with financial administrators around the university and will interact regularly with colleagues both in the schools and colleges, and in the central financial administration. The position is a customer focused role.

Qualifications:
Strong, contemporary computing skills are required, including knowledge of at least one of the most common Business Intelligence software suites (preferably IBM/Cognos), as well as experience working with at least one common ERP software suite (preferably Banner/Ellucian). In-depth knowledge of accounting and finance is also required. Specific knowledge expected:

  • 4 -6 years of applicable work experience in finance, accounting, analytics, data science, business intelligence, preferably in higher education

  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems by asking the right questions, thinking creatively, developing algorithms, testing, and iterating

  • Advanced knowledge of accounting and finance required.

  • Capable of thinking strategically and tactically about Northeastern 2025 to support its goals

  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g., Cognos, Argos, Tableau, Excel)

  • Strong customer service orientation characterized by responsiveness and tact;

  • Experience with ad hoc query tools, and the ability to develop queries from scratch;

  • Experience building multi-variant planning models and the skills needed to facilitate the development of such models at Northeastern;

  • Experience with business process analysis, and the ability to convert business analyses to report

    specifications;

  • Ability to work both freely and as a collaborative team member

    A Bachelor's Degree is required for this position. The position requires 4-6 years of relevant experience. Knowledge of contemporary financial reporting tools is required. The successful candidate will have excellent customer relations skills.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience in a not-for-profit environment employing fund accounting is desirable.

    Knowledge of enrollment-related data and its interpretation desired.

    An advanced degree in accounting, finance, statistics, mathematics, data science, computer science, economics, or other quantitative research discipline is preferred.
