Job Description

The Machine Learning Research lab in the School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems at Northern Arizona University is looking to recruit a new research assistant for 1 year. Principal job duties entail writing R/C/C++/Python/JavaScript code to support various research projects, publishing that code online as free/open-source software, preparing tables and figures to summarize research results; presenting weekly progress updates to the lab Director, writing scientific papers describing new algorithms/results, traveling to present research at local and international conferences, contributing to the weekly lab meetings, helping to train students working on related research projects, and helping to prepare grant applications. Renewal subject to funding availability

 

Essential Position Responsibilities

Develops or guides research activities, including data collection, evaluation, and analysis.
Performs independent research and analysis using advanced methods or procedures.
Determines appropriate protocols or adjustments related to the type of experiment being conducted.
Performs skilled procedures, tests, or analyses with a high degree of proficiency.
Designs or modifies procedures, tests, analyses, or protocols; may design, develop, or fabricate specialized equipment or systems.
Analyzes data and writes research reports; may draft materials for publication.
Plans and coordinates analysis and other research activity and may contribute to complex analysis of data.
Monitors research operating procedures and performs quality control checks to ensure procedures are followed.
May direct the work of, mentor, and/or evaluate paid students or other research support resources.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline. 2-4 years of research support experience.
Experience in programming, big data analysis, visualization, and/or machine learning research.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters in Computer Science or Statistics
Have published peer-reviewed research papers; free/open-sources software packages related to machine learning, data analysis and/or visualization.
