General Summary/Purpose

Research Nurse will be responsible for providing quality nursing assessment, patient advocacy, safety, interventions, and compassionate care. The Research Nurse will also engage in continuous professional development and inter-professional communication as benefits the research process and patient health and experience. The Research Nurse will conduct experimental research sessions, coordinate protocol training for the inpatient research unit, assist with protocol development and troubleshooting as a study team member, and perform data handling functions as required per protocol.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete all required documentation according to established guidelines and time frames. Properly document in medical records and research binders.
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding guidelines for the collection of research data and Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit’s (BPRU’s) standardized methods of data management.
  • Maintain emergency and rescue medication inventory on a monthly basis. Administer medications per order and monitors effect.
  • Assess potential and current research participants to review drug histories and symptomology, medical information, and physiological changes.
  • Witness consent procedures.
  • Process blood specimens per protocol and in accordance with outside lab procedures (e.g., Quest, Lab Corp, ACM).
  • Alert physician and CRNP to any participant’s abnormal lab value, test result, or physical assessment for further follow-up.
  • Schedule research participants by producing calendars for the subject’s interview, training, and session days.
  • Confirm the availability of the necessary test area facilities and coordination of any additional protocol personnel.
  • Adhere to and promote safety procedures.
  • Promote and follow standard precautions at all times.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) activities as needed.
  • Collect data for QA activities.
  • Identify quality improvement (QI) opportunities leading to increased patient safety.
  • Know, understand, and abide by the Johns Hopkins University and BPRU policies and procedures.
  • Seek policy/procedure clarification as needed.
  • Initiate development and implementation of new policies and procedures as needed in collaboration with inter-professional team members. Other duties as job dictates.
  • Treat research participants with courtesy, respect, and caring behaviors.

  • Conduct interviews and nursing assessments with potential research participants of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.

  • Utilize resources in a cost-efficient manner.
  • Identify ways to improve efficiency and outcomes of work standards.
  • Complete inventory of supplies as assigned.
  • Contribute to the safety and security of the unit environment through personal actions.
  • Responsible for running research protocol sessions with human volunteers, collecting physiological and behavioral data.
  • Assist in the telephone screening and post-screen assessment process.
  • Conduct data collection tasks including but not limited to collection of urine, blood, and saliva samples, electrocardiograms, administration of self-report questionnaires, direct observation and rating and recording of subject's condition, monitoring of physiological measures, collection and measurement of pupil photographs.
  • Provide nursing support in RRU for physical examinations, patient history, phlebotomy, IV placement, capnography, and other licensed RN interventions as needed per protocol.
  • Complete all pertinent research forms.
  • Input data into electronic data capture (eDC) applications as required by protocol.
  • Ability to analyze and operate technical and scientific equipment and perform required tests with the highest degree of accuracy.
  • Maintain equipment competencies.
  • Assist in ensuring routine equipment maintenance and calibration is completed as indicated by manufacturer’s recommendations and JHBMC policy.
  • Assist in coordination of repair of faulty equipment.
  • Assist in scheduling of routine preventive maintenance of nursing equipment by notifying patient care manager.
  • Other duties as job dictates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or related discipline.
  • 1-2 years research experience.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to concentrate and demonstrate good attention to detail under stressful circumstances. Able to function in a high-pressure position while managing tasks for multiple protocols. Ability to prioritize activities.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills both in person and telephone in order to carry out protocols with human volunteers of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
  • Ability to perform work duties with a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail regardless of sudden deadlines and changing priorities. Must be able to make decisions and act independently while keeping research team informed.
  • Work may require prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. Transport equipment and supplies usually less than 25 pounds.
  • Experience with industry sponsored research, electronic data capture systems, source documentation, and GCP preferred.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.
  • Ability to interact with faculty and staff on research teams, in clinical programs, and with educational outreach initiative to strategize about their communication needs.
  • Excellent oral communication skills to deal effectively within and outside the department.
  • Excellent written communications skills in a variety of forms, print material, website content, speeches, and publicity materials.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
