Starting Salary: $35,568

Reports To: Director, Residential Life (varies by position)

Positions Supervised: Assistant Area Coordinator, Student Employee; Community Advisor, Student Employee

Job Summary

The area coordinator (AC) is responsible for two or more residence halls or non-traditional residential housing locations. This position serves as a role model, facilitator, leader and essential employee in the effective operation of the residence life program. The area coordinator is an at-will employee who is appointed to a year-round, full-time, live-in position.

The area coordinator recognizes that his or her primary residence in Lindenwood’s housing is a required term and condition of employment, and that the area coordinator’s right to Lindenwood housing terminates upon the area coordinator’s separation from employment as area coordinator. The area coordinator agrees to abide by the terms and conditions set forth in the Lindenwood Housing Contract and Lindenwood’s Residential Housing Policies and Procedures, including any and all occupancy limits set forth in those agreements.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains and evaluates student employees
  • Understands and manages student conflict
  • Oversees the Residence Hall Association operations within the hall
  • Fosters community environment, encouraging students’ intellectual, social and personal growth
  • Serves as a member of the professional staff on-call duty rotation; hours and days may vary, including evenings and weekends
  • Leads residential operations support in the summertime and as needed
  • Manages maintenance and custodial needs for either a residential area or residence halls
  • Assists in crisis intervention and serves as a resource or referral agent during the academic year, including breaks and holidays
  • Maintains office hours to meet with residents


Service Orientation

  • Organizes and promotes activities and programs within the residence halls
  • Maintains familiarity with university resources in order to make referrals and provide general information


Communication, Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Understands, supports and enforces university policies
  • Helps students experiencing emotional, academic or physical hardships, suggesting referrals as appropriate
  • Assists in conducting residence hall professional staff training
  • Provides innovative means of communication with residents
  • Collaborates with appropriate staff to resolve maintenance, furniture inventory and safety issues


Planning, Organizing and Accountability

  • Oversees the planning of events and programs led by residential staff
  • Conducts room inspections periodically to ensure health and wellness
  • Holds one-on-one monthly meetings with student employees
  • Organizes and schedules work for community advisors and assistant area coordinators, including hall coverage
  • Manages and approves student employee timesheets


Initiative, Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Conducts minor disciplinary meetings
  • Participates in resident life administrative operations, committee assignments and task forces

Job may require other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered (additional requirements may be designated by position).

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, college personnel administration, psychology, counseling or related field
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in residence life preferred
  • Experience in programming, health and wellness and/or student conduct preferred


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities – May be representative, but not all inclusive, of the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform this job competently.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Clear understanding of student development theories
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite
  • Basic knowledge of facility management
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Proficient e-mail use
  • Proficient use of web portals and software management tools
  • Knowledge of StarRez, Workday and Qualtrics


Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of this job’s functions.

  • This position should be the AC’s primary responsibility. Any non-academic time commitments outside the area coordinator position must be approved by the AC’s supervisor and must not exceed 5 hours per week. Exceptions must have the approval of the director of residential life or designee
  • Primary residence in campus housing required
  • Appropriate dress required
  • Serves as a campus security authority (CSA)
