The Rice University Endowment is approximately $6 billion and ranks in the top 20 endowments of private research universities (by market value) in the US. The endowment is critical to the university’s ability to achieve its goals. The annual distribution from the endowment funds nearly half of the university’s annual operating budget. The Rice Management Company ( RMC ) is a division of Rice University with the goal of providing a stable source of funding for current university operations and to preserve and grow the purchasing power of the endowment to benefit future generations of students. The RMC is responsible for all endowment matters of the university including asset allocation, the selection and termination of investment managers, monitoring performance of the portfolio, and reporting to the Rice Management Company Board of Directors. The endowment primarily utilizes outside investment managers and invests globally across all asset classes.
The investment director is actively involved in all aspects of investment and manager research for the Rice Endowment. This position focuses on one or two of the asset classes within the endowment. S/he monitors existing investments and evaluates potential investments.
Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement Experience may not be substituted for the education requirement. Education Preferred
Strongly prefer MBA or other advanced degree
Experience Required 8 years Type of Experience
Eight years of related experience

- Good written and oral communication skills
- Strong work ethic and willingness to work until the task is completed successfully

- Expertise with computer programs, Excel, PowerPoint, internet research

Internal: Regular contact with other Rice University staff
External: Regular contact with external partners
Physical Demands
Long period of time working in front of a computer (up to eight hours)
Working Conditions
May be required to work extended hours, on weekends and in the evenings, as needed to complete work assignment

Position is not considered essential during a campus emergency.

- Prepares and presents reports for the routine review of asset class level performance
- Actively monitors and reports on portfolio risk and exposures, make recommendations on changes
- Proactively identifies and maintains a list of prospective investments
- Leads the manager due diligence process
- Ensures comprehensive files exist on all portfolio managers
- Negotiates investment manager contracts and terms
- Develops and maintains asset class models and databases
- Develops and presents research on attractive investment themes
- Participates in investment research projects from asset allocation to security level review
- Assists in the preparation of materials for quarterly board meetings
- Co-manages investment analyst and associate team
