The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, user-focused, forward-looking, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Director of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services. Guided by an imperative to support the UCSB research and scholarship at the highest level, the Library is currently reorganizing two administrative units in the Division of Research Resources & Scholarly Communication. The integration of Acquisitions & Resources Management Services with Content Management Services will result in the creation of a re-envisioned technical services department that will enable all its staff to fully capitalize on collective strengths and expertise and allow them to flourish professionally in a highly collaborative and dynamic environment. The Director will lead the operations of the newly created Department of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services and will provide vision and leadership in developing technical services that will support the innovative and interdisciplinary scholarly activities of the UCSB community. The Department includes a staff of approximately 24 (including 7 Librarians and Library Professionals, and 17 Library Assistants) who provide timely access to information resources in all formats for the UCSB Library.
The successful candidate will lead UCSB acquisition and discovery services in forward-thinking directions as information organization, discovery, and access tools change and evolve. The University of California Libraries (UC Libraries) are recognized nationally and internationally as leaders in advancing Open Access and are well on the way to integrating these values into collection strategies. The mission of the Department of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services is to support UCSB research, teaching, and academic success by making library resources discoverable and accessible. Implementation will require innovative approaches to content management services that meet and support evolving transformations of scholarly communication, ongoing changes in the publishing market, and the transition to Open Access.
The UC Libraries strive to enhance service for all members of the UC community and are currently planning the implementation of the UC’s first-ever system-wide integrated library system (SILS). The new system will help technical services across all UC libraries to benefit from the operational efficiencies and transformative opportunities, resulting in an improved end-user experience in discovering and accessing UC’s vast physical and electronic collections. The Director will play an active role in the forthcoming migration of the SILS project, including a system-wide implementation of the Ex Libris Alma and Primo services, decision-making around SILS policies and practices, internal training, and end-user outreach.
Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Research Resources & Scholarly Communication, the Director:
Implements a dynamic, strategic vision and provides leadership in planning and managing all aspects of the Department of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services, including acquisition and processing of research resources in all formats, cataloging processes, metadata creation and management, electronic resource support, and digital content metadata; and oversees goal setting, defining priorities, designing and monitoring workflows, and ongoing evaluation of services for the Department.
Establishes guidelines for the ongoing work of technical services staff in acquiring, describing, and providing access to library research resources and unique special collections in compliance with national and international standards and practices.
Provides effective departmental management through the development and implementation of initiatives and ensuring accountability-driven performance expectations; and manages employee hiring, supervision, training, coaching, and professional guidance to direct reports.
Manages the departmental budget; provides leadership in planning, implementing, and assessing technical services' activities to ensure timely access to materials and to consider emerging trends; and analyzes and reports on the work of the Department of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services for recommendations related to staffing, equipment, and training.
Builds intensely collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the library system, including the California Digital Library; works closely with Directors of Special Research Collections and Collection Strategies to establish best practices for the acquisition, care, handling, description, and security of library collections; and works across the UCSB Library to create a cohesive and effective program for the acquisition, description, and access to research resources.
Serves as primary liaison for matters related to technical services operations and priorities; ensures that the Department of Resource Acquisition and Discovery Services provides a timely response to cataloging and metadata related questions, both bibliographic and authority-based; and coordinates a resolution of complex cataloging, access, and discovery problems, including those associated with monographs, serials, e-resources, and non-textual formats.
Keeps abreast of current standards and emerging technologies to support the organization of and access to Library resources effectively; communicates new developments and trends affecting the Department's work; regularly reviews methods, processing software, automation potential, and outsourcing opportunities; and maintains a future-oriented approach in planning for new and evolving responsibilities across the Department.
Represents the UCSB Library on UC system-wide committees and ad-hoc groups related to technical services; participates in general administrative duties, library-wide activities, committees, and special projects; and represents the Library in local, regional, and national organizations.
- At the time of application, ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Science, OR at least a Master's degree in a relevant field;
- At time of application, at least five years’ full-time professional library experience in technical services; and
- At time of application, at least two years’ experience supervising technical services staff.
- Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced by submitted materials including the CV, Cover Letter, and an optional but encouraged statement of diversity.
- Demonstrated experience managing the workflow of one or more technical services units, such as acquisitions, electronic resources, metadata management, monographic cataloging, or serials cataloging;
- Thorough understanding of the relationship between bibliographic and authority records in an automated environment, including discovery system functionality generated from MARC and non-MARC metadata;
- Working knowledge of library management systems and electronic resource management systems;
- Experience with library services platforms, such as Ex Libris Alma and discovery systems such as Ex Libris Primo;
- Successful working experience with cataloging standards, tools, and resources, such as RDA, LCSH, LCCS, MARC21, or other metadata schemes;
- Experience with LC-PCC, BIBCO, NACO, and CONSER cataloging policy and cataloging guidelines;
- Knowledge of or demonstrated interest in BIBFRAME and LRM development and other library applications of linked open data;
- Strong data analysis skills, including gathering, interpreting, and presenting information; and
- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills.
