General Summary/Purpose:

This position will perform research in medical visualization, robotics and instrumentation with a focus on artificial intelligence, perception, visualization, and medical imaging. The position involves work on one collaborative project funded by National Institutes of Health, NIBIB, under grant # 1R01EB025883-01A1, PI. Iordachita, title “Enabling technology for image-guided robot-assisted sub-retinal injections”.

Note: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Develop an algorithm for OCT volumes real-time registration of the retina.
  2. Develop an algorithm for registration of intra-operative scans to the pre-operative ones, and use them for live visualization and also for robot path planning.
  3. Develop an algorithm for integration of tracking algorithms (both from iOCT and optical images) in the robotic control for semi-autonomous navigations.
  4. Collect, analyze, and report data for publication. Develop and maintain project wiki page.
  • Position will receive work assignments on weekly basis and will be expected to complete most of them independently.
  • Will work with a post-doc on a daily basis and have occasional meetings with clinicians at JHU School of Medicine and engineers at WSE.
  • Primary research interactions will take place within the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (lcrs.jhu.edu).

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in ECE, EE, BME or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Some related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Technical experience in qualitative data collection and performing statistical analysis. Must have an understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from experience.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision. Able to conduct experiments autonomously according to precise instructions. Able to exercise independent judgment to resolve minor problems arising while conducting experiments.
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain attention to detail
  • Applicants who are near to completion of a PhD (or equivalent) will be preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Microsoft Office, C++, Open CV, Unity 3D, LATEX, OpenGL.
  • Ability of picking up various computer based applications and data analysis tools.
  • Strong background in mechatronics, computing, electronic engineering, bioengineering or other related subjects.

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely to a level consistent with publications in highly regarded international journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
  • Ability to contribute to a complex research program.

Related work experience:

  • At least 1-year experience in an academic research environment preferred.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
