Position Title Assistant Professor
Department Bioengineering
Position Description

The Department of Bioengineering at Rice University, located in Houston, TX, seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of computational/theoretical bioengineering with a start date of July 2021. The department invites Assistant Professor candidates with expertise in computational and/or theoretical modelling of biological systems. Particular areas of interest are computational modeling of biological systems, biomolecular/protein engineering, cancer research, and systems biology. Candidates seeking to complement their computational program with the experimental approaches are also encouraged to apply. Outstanding candidates at higher rank will be considered.

Faculty members are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, perform research in their specialized area, and contribute to university service. Applicants should demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching, and collegial service. Successful candidates will therefore have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates will be expected to establish a strong research program supported by extramural funding. Rice offers an outstanding environment for research at the interface of bioengineering, medicine, and biology with strong collaborations with the adjacent Texas Medical Center.

Consistent with the National Research Council’s report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond, we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and work in research groups that “… [integrate] the knowledge, tools, and ways of thinking…” from engineering, mathematics, and computational, natural, social and behavioral sciences to solve societal problems using a convergent approach.

We seek greater representation of women, minorities, people with disabilities, and veterans in disciplines in which they have historically been underrepresented; to attract international students from a wider range of countries and backgrounds; to accelerate progress in building a faculty and staff who are diverse in background and thought; and an inclusive environment that fosters interaction and understanding within our diverse community.

Requirements
All candidates must have a PhD degree in bioengineering or a related field, conferred by July 1, 2020 and at least one year of postdoctoral experience.

Application Materials and Deadline
The committee will begin reviewing the application on November 1, 2020 and the candidates are encouraged to make sure their application is complete by that date to ensure full consideration. Applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. To apply, please submit the following materials: (1) cover letter, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) research statement (up to 5 pages), and (4) statement of teaching philosophy (up to 2 pages) to the job posting ( http://jobs.rice.edu/postings/24340 ).
