Area Irrigation and Water Resources Advisor

The Area Irrigation and Water Resources Advisor will serve irrigated agriculture producers, agricultural water districts, environmental groups, and water and land resource professionals in both the public and private sectors in the four-county region. The advisor will focus on the efficient use of irrigation water at the farm level through improved irrigation methods, improved irrigation scheduling, and regulated deficit irrigation strategies.

 

1. Support assessments of the impacts of irrigated agriculture on the environment and help growers cope with new laws, such as the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program (ILRP) and the Sustainable Groundwater Water Management Act (SGMA).

 

Work closely with local Orchard Advisors as the region is dominated by tree crops or any other crops and related issues such as irrigated pasture, field crops, row crops, groundwater recharge, flow measurements, and water diversions.

Work with growers, farming operations, commodity boards, irrigation districts and local natural resources agencies.

Counties of Responsibility. This position focusses on irrigation and water resource issues in a four county area.  There is opportunity and expectation to work collaboratively across counties.

 

Reporting Relationship: The CE advisor serves under the administrative guidance of the University of California Cooperative Extension Glenn County Director, with input from the UCCE Tehama, Colusa and Shasta County Directors.

Qualifications and Skills Required  Required Qualifications

Education:  A minimum of a master's degree is required though other advanced degrees are encouraged, in disciplines such as water resources, soils, agronomy, horticulture, agricultural engineering or other closely related fields.

 

Additional Requirements:

• Extension experience and demonstrated excellence in the areas of applied research is desired.
• Coursework and experience in statistical analysis, experimental design, soil fertility, soil physics, water quality, principles of irrigation and agricultural engineering, and geographic information systems are desired.
• Training and experience in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research and collaboration is preferred.
• Familiarity with current California water regulations such as ILRP, SGMA, SB-88 and AB-589 is a benefit.
• Knowledge and demonstrated use of remote methods of conducting outreach are a benefit.
