Open Rank Tenure Track in Physical Activity and Nutrition

At a time when public health has never been more important, Temple University’s College of Public Health is working to solve health’s complexities for a better tomorrow. As one of the largest colleges of public health in the country, we are home to faculty who specialize in 17 health disciplines to prepare researchers, practitioners and educators to collaborate across disciplines to understand community needs, create evidence-based solutions, and deliver effective, compassionate care. We invite applications for tenured and tenure track faculty at all ranks conducting research in physical activity, nutrition, and health to join a growing faculty in spring or fall 2021.

Qualifications. We seek faculty with expertise in prevention science, dissemination and implementation, translation of evidence-based interventions, qualitative/mixed methods research, and health disparities. We welcome applications from scholars who apply this expertise to a wide range of populations (children/adolescents, older adults), health-related outcomes, and settings involving physical activity, nutrition, obesity or chronic disease prevention. For early career applicants, preferred candidates hold the rank of assistant professor or a postdoctoral position, but we will also consider exceptional doctoral students who will complete a doctorate prior to appointment. Midcareer and senior applicants should have an active, externally-funded research portfolio and record appropriate to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Cluster hiring of research teams including senior and early career faculty is encouraged. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience. The Department. Kinesiology is respected for its undergraduate and graduate programs, research, and service to the University. The undergraduate program is comprised of degrees in Exercise and Sports Science and Kinesiology, with a graduate program in Integrated Exercise Physiology. The Department is also responsible for delivering courses in anatomy and physiology, as well as physical activity, to the wider university community.

Dr. Mark Stoutenberg, an exercise physiologist who holds an MPH and focuses his research on implementation science for physical activity and lifestyle intervention in community settings, joined Temple as Kinesiology Department Chair July 1, 2020. Under his leadership, the Department is embarking on a bold expansion in developing academic programs that align with the overall public health mission of the College. In addition to strengthening current programs, future academic programs and research initiatives will focus on the intersection of physical activity, nutrition, obesity, and chronic disease prevention with the social determinants of health. Situated in a vibrant, urban environment the Department places a high priority on exploring local public health inequities and working proactively with community partners to address existing health disparities.

The College. Devoted to an interprofessional environment for academic programming and research, the College of Public Health, a CEPH-accredited school of public health, is a constellation of academic units of public health, social work and health profession disciplines, enrolling about 4,200 students. The College’s research focuses on social, behavioral, and environmental inquiries, medical/health interventions, and basic science and is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and other major funders. The College has a robust Office of Research to assist researchers, including staff in a Center for Community Engaged Research and Practice. We are harnessing the collective energies of our clinical disciplines through an emerging, innovative framework for interprofessional education.

The University. Temple is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination. The National Science Foundation ranks Temple among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the nation and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry and research centers including CPH’s Center for Obesity Research and Education.
