The Director oversees the efforts of a Center that has as its mission: to support underrepresented students including BIPOC and first generation students; to create an inclusive campus environment for all students; and to further develop the collective multicultural competence and antiracism work of the Bowdoin community. As a member of the Dean of Student Affairs’ leadership team, the Director works collaboratively with student leaders, faculty, administrators, alumni, and community contacts to assess and address the needs of multicultural students through advising, advocacy and robust programming. The Director also serves as a resource for multicultural students, providing information, support and referrals to campus and community resources on an as needed basis. In addition to other skills, we are interested in individuals who bring experience or research in working with Native American people and communities.

Education/Skills Requirements

A Master’s degree is strongly preferred, preferably in a related field or a field incorporating relevant coursework. A Bachelor’s degree is required. The Director must be collaborative, well organized, and experienced in advising, program planning and evaluation. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential. A demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment is critical. Excellent interpersonal skills, presentation and training skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing are necessary.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

A minimum of three years of experience working with college or high school students of color and/or first-generation college students in an educational setting. Commitment to and deep understanding of the concerns of multicultural students in higher education, and a strong appreciation for the diverse needs of all members of the campus community are vital.

Standard Work Days and Hours

40 hours/week, 11 months/year. Schedule will vary – typical hours Monday – Friday between 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with evening and weekend hours required. This is an exempt-level position and requires the time commitment necessary to fulfill all of the job responsibilities.
