Overview:

Quinnipiac University seeks applicants for the Dean, School of Medicine position. The Dean of the Netter School of Medicine reports to the Provost and oversees the School’s comprehensive academic and clinical mission. The Dean provides strategic vision and operational leadership of the School, managing policies, programs, budgets, and resource allocation to achieve its mission. The Dean is expected to set the highest standards of intellectual engagement and accomplishment for the School, further creating an environment that supports the School community and its clinical partners. Quinnipiac seeks a strategic and visionary leader to build on its academic excellence, enhance its diversity, and further advance the reputation of the School.

The Dean will develop and implement strategies to position the school and its graduates as competent professionals in an evolving healthcare landscape. In addition to serving as the academic leader of the school, the Dean will be a key contributor to institutional success through enhanced responsibilities in fiscal and administrative matters, regular analysis of labor market trends, assessment of changes in the skills demanded by employers, and collaboration with faculty and staff in modifying programs in response to labor market and skills trends. A key area of focus for the new Dean will also be defining, developing, and sustaining robust inter-professional collaborations between School of Health Sciences, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Nursing.

About the School:

The Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University is a diverse community of active learners, faculty and partnering clinicians who are fully committed to patient-centered care. Named after the famed medical illustrator, Frank H. Netter, MD, the medical school honors his legacy with a clear vision of wellness and a dedication to practicing medicine with precision and a sense of humanity. The MD program is intentionally designed to combine essential clinical skill building with the development of patient-centered skills, guided by faculty, advisers and community physicians. The faculty members and administrators are renowned educators, scholars and experts in their respective medical specialties. The Netter School maintains a strong network of clinical partners and affiliates in New England. The medical school is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges. In March 2020, the fourth graduating class matched to prestigious residency programs located in 22 states plus the District of Columbia.

Responsibilities:

Provide visionary leadership

• Continue the implementation of the School’s strategic plan, which aligns with the University’s goals;
• Anticipate the critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future and act on them as appropriate;
• Take an entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing innovative ideas to enhance the School’s mission and identity on a national scale; and
• Create and articulate an inspiring vision for the School that evolves at an appropriate pace within the dynamic field of healthcare.

Build organizational capacity

• Attract, recruit, and retain talented faculty and staff, motivate and delegate effectively, and manage performance; • Foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence; • Enhance financial and clinical resources to better position the medical school to achieve the next level of educational opportunity for students; • Connect and build strong collaborative relationships across the School and the University, demonstrating strong emotional intelligence and an ability to communicate clearly; and • Encourage others to share the spotlight, thereby supporting the success of students, staff, and faculty alike. Raise visibility and resources • Strengthen existing clinical partnerships and create new partnerships;
• Connect the School to underserved/underrepresented populations and an understanding of the needs of the patient population, especially in Connecticut and elsewhere in New England;
• Keep alumni engaged in the life of the School; and
• Raise funds to support the School’s mission. Education Requirements:
  • The successful candidate will have earned an MD and have leadership experience in an academic medical center.
Qualifications:
  • Collaborative and consultative approach to decision-making;
  • Sound judgment, perspective, and unimpeachable integrity;
  • Stellar interpersonal skills, including public speaking and writing;
  • Achievements in, and commitment to, a diverse and inclusive environment that supports academic and operational excellence;
  • Fundraising track record or the exceptional interpersonal skills that would indicate high potential in this area;
  • Ability to anticipate trends in medical education and to seize opportunities with alacrity;
  • Data-driven approach to learning and operational effectiveness;
  • Scholarly track record that suggests an understanding of the research process in academic medical centers;
  • Public or professional leadership and advocacy in the health professions;
  • Experience with accreditation processes relevant to medical school programs;
  • Involvement with regulatory oversight, ideally including contract management and negotiations; and
  • Familiarity with academic appeals and grievance processes.
