Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine is seeking aCritical Care Physician Assistant to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary critical care team; resident physicians, nurse practitioners, staff nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, and Attending Faculty to provide comprehensive care to critically ill patients. The Physician Assistant will work under the supervision of an attending intensive care physician who is a member of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine or the Division of Hospital Medicine, both in the Department of Medicine.

The Physician Assistant will practice within the guidelines of the unit, department and institution and in accordance with the Physician Assistant -Physician Delegation Agreement required and approved by the state of Maryland. The Physician Assistant will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtain history and perform physical examinations primarily on IMC/ICU patients, and acute care patients as needed.
  • Determine the need for and write orders for medications, procedures, mechanical ventilation and other life support systems, and other treatments as necessary.
  • Participate in daily rounds to report progress of specific patients and help to develop care plans, including paths to discharge from the IMC, ICU, or inpatient settings.
  • Perform procedures such as arterial catheterization, central venous catheterization, and thoracentesis and may instruct residents in optimal performance of these procedures.
  • Educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care.
  • Participate as a teacher and as a learner in educational activities related to COVID19.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience with acute/critically ill patients. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR/ACLS certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

  • Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members.
  • Analytical abilities are necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work well as a member of a health care team with a high degree of self-motivation.
  • General computer knowledge and ability to use computerized medical information systems.
  • The Physician Assistant must be able to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to lift patients, 50 lbs. or more. Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
