Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations

The Johns Hopkins University was the first modern research university in the United States, emphasizing research and the advancement of knowledge along with teaching of students. Since its creation in 2007, the School of Education (SOE) has grown to enroll nearly 2500 students and award more than 500 masters degrees in education annually, the largest number of any institution in Maryland. The SOE is routinely ranked among the nation’s top Schools of Education by US News and World Report and is a national leader in delivering online graduate education. The mission of the SOE is to generate knowledge to inform policy and practice and educate society to address the most important challenges faced by individuals, schools, and communities. This is accomplished through teaching, research, and service. In support of its mission, the SOE operates Elmer A. Henderson: A Johns Hopkins Partnership School, a public K-8 school in East Baltimore.

The SOE and Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) are seeking an Associate Dean who will provide strategic leadership to the comprehensive Development and Alumni Relations programs of the SOE. This position is responsible for the development and implementation of all fundraising and engagement strategies and activities to carry forward the mission and vision of this diverse academic population. The position is responsible for planning and conducting all aspects of private sector fundraising, including managing the SOE’s National Advisory Council, orchestrating major fundraising campaigns and related programmatic activity involving major and principal gift work, and overseeing constituent engagement and corporate and foundation fundraising. The Associate Dean is a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team and is a key thought partner to fellow Associate Deans at the SOE. In addition, the Associate Dean serves as a member of the Management Committee of the Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations organization. This position reports to the Dean of the School of Education and to the JHU Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the evaluation, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of significant prospects and donors. Develop and execute effective strategies as required to obtain and maintain private sector funding support for the SOE’s priorities, working closely with the Dean and other key university leadership.
  • Provide overall strategic leadership for SOE campaign planning including: fundraising priorities, development, constituent engagement, alumni and donor outreach activities and staff functions. Use a metrics-driven approach to build a strong portfolio of $1 million+ prospects while continuing the growth of private funding from corporation and foundation support for SOE.
  • Contribute to the School’s management as an active member of the SOE Leadership Team.
  • Collaborate with the SOE’s academic departments and research centersto identity their funding needs and optimize their participation in the development process.
  • Work closely with the Dean and the Dean’s staff in order to develop private support and priorities for SOE.
  • Direct staff of professional fundraisers, leading the annual work plan and goal setting processes. Actively evaluate each officer’s progress and contributions in accordance with DAR metrics and standards.
  • Plan, manage and/or oversee all SOE constituent engagement activities. Develop and implement an outreach strategy to interest, engage and involve alumni and friends in advancing the mission of the SOE.
  • Work closely with the Dean to manage and expand the School’s National Advisory Council and other volunteer groups. Coordinate SOE activities with volunteers, advisory council members, trustees and University leadership.
  • Lead or when appropriate coordinate all aspects of the SOE-centered development service functions such as gift processing, annual giving stewardship, reporting, prospect tracking and donor research.
  • Coordinate SOE Development and Alumni Relations activities with Johns Hopkins Division of Development and Alumni Relations and University Leadership.
  • Develop strategic development communications to provide SOE leadership, faculty, and staff with unified, concise, and consistent messaging around vision and priorities.
  • As a senior leader in Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations, participate on committees as requested to develop the next campaign or other priorities as identified.
  • Manage a team of Development and Alumni Relations professionals and an annual budget of $1.0 million.
  • Build and sustain collaborative relationships with colleagues across the institution tasked with revenue generation for the SOE, including but not limited to the DAR office of foundation relations, and SOE research centers and grant services.


Qualifications:

  • A baccalaureate degree is required. Seven plus years of progressively responsible fundraising experience required.
  • Experience in higher education development strongly preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degrees are preferred

Candidate should:

  • Be able to understand and articulate academic values/goals, and work collaboratively with faculty, administration, students, alumni and volunteer leadership.
  • Be able to establish objectives, set performance standards and organize and motivate a staff team and its individual members to achieve fund raising and alumni relations goals.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have a strong track record of successfully soliciting major and principal gifts and management experience, preferably in a development setting.
  • Have a thorough appreciation of academic planning and its relationship to the effective application of fundraising and alumni relations’ principles.
  • Have demonstrated experience with campaign planning, fundraising, project management, events organization and execution.
  • Have demonstrated management and budgeting skills.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
