Denison University
Assistant Professor, Chemistry

The DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY at DENISON UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-track position at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level starting Fall 2021. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level and the capacity to develop a research program that recruits and engages undergraduates in publishable research. Candidates must bring strength to teaching one of our 300 level courses (Analytical, Inorganic, Physical, or Polymer Chemistry). One of the ways Denison University is committed to facilitating the inclusion and success of groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines is by increasing faculty diversity. Individuals who identify as racially or ethnically underrepresented in STEM disciplines are especially encouraged to apply. A Ph.D. is required, and research experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred.

Teaching responsibilities will include introductory chemistry, at least one intermediate 300 level course, and an advanced course in the candidate’s field of expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to teach on average 9 contact hours per semester which includes both classroom and laboratory instruction. Our department expects active faculty engagement mentoring undergraduates in publishable research. The college supports research and teaching with substantial laboratory start-up funds, generous professional development opportunities, a semester-long pre-tenure leave, and readily available summer research student support. For details on Denison-sponsored faculty benefits see denison.edu/forms/faculty-handbook. Denison faculty are also expected to contribute to campus governance and participate in the life and continued growth of the broader campus community.

To achieve our mission as a liberal arts college, we continually strive to foster an academically and culturally diverse campus community which recognizes the value of all persons regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or socio-economic background. For additional information and resources, please see our Diversity Contact List at denison.edu/forms/diversity-guide. Denison University is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Our commitment to being an antiracist and diverse learning and working community is essential to our educational mission. For more information on ways we are committing to be a campus community dedicated to antiracism please see President Adam Weinberg’s statement denison.edu/campus/president/speeches/135388.

Denison University is an increasingly diverse, highly selective, and nationally ranked residential liberal arts college located in Granville, Ohio, 30 minutes east of the Columbus metropolitan area (experiencecolumbus.com). Our ACS-accredited department has ten full-time tenure-track faculty, well-developed programs in both chemistry and biochemistry, excellent classroom and laboratory facilities, and a broad range of instrumentation that is used in both teaching and research (denison.edu/academics/chemistry-biochemistry/laboratory-equipment). See our website (denison.edu/academics/chemistry-biochemistry) for more detailed descriptions of our program.

Applicants should submit a cover letter addressing their motivations for teaching at a small, residential, liberal arts college, curriculum vitae including a publication list, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and separate statements addressing their: 1) teaching philosophy across the curriculum, including their capacity to teach introductory (100 level) and intermediate (300 level) courses 2) detailed summary of proposed research (a ~5-page summary), and 3) actionable ideas to foster an equitable experience and belonging for students traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines. These materials and three letters of recommendation should be submitted online at https://employment.denison.edu. To assure full consideration, completed applications must be received by September 20, 2020.
