Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer leads the development and implementation of proactive equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives in alignment with the college’s strategic plan to create and nurture a college climate that is welcoming, inclusive, respectful and free from discrimination, intolerance and harassment. Responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive and strategic equity, diversity and inclusion program, the Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer promotes an inclusive environment for all students, staff, and faculty. This includes advising the college administration on matters affecting teaching and learning, recruitment, selection, training and education of the college community for the purpose of creating an inclusive climate. This position will lead the work of assessing the effectiveness of institutional equity and diversity goals and outreach efforts and is expected to lead to measurable improvements in educational and organizational climate and recruitment/retention of a diverse workforce and student body.

 

What you will do in this role

  • Plan, direct, implement, evaluate and update programs that support equity, diversity and inclusion activities that create and nurture a diverse and inclusive college climate consistent with the strategic plan. This strategic program is expected to lead to measurable improvements in educational and organizational climate and the recruitment/retention of a diverse workforce and student body. Provide regular reports to the President and Vice Presidents concerning the progress of the diversity programs, initiatives and activities.
  • Working closely with the Vice President for Learning and academic leadership, provide best practices and current scholarship regarding embedding best practices in the development of equitable and inclusive curriculum and pedagogical practice.
  • Coordinate with other college offices in the development, implementation and regular use of data tools such as campus climate surveys, demographic studies, benchmarking studies, etc. to measure success regarding campus equity and diversity efforts and success of faculty, staff and students in underrepresented groups. Complete required annual college report on diversity outcomes, as well as required federal, state and local reports (MHEC diversity report, VETS 100 etc.).
  • Develop and maintain meaningful relationships and serve as college liaison with numerous external diverse and underrepresented populations, communities and agencies to advance equity and diversity and achieve mutual objectives.
  • Partner with Human Resources Department and the Office of Faculty and Staff Professional Development to develop and coordinate a robust professional development program for the college community. This training should support equity and cultural competencies, a climate of equity and inclusion and the overall college community to live, work, and interact productively in an increasingly diverse and complex world. The training should include mandatory onboarding faculty and staff training.
  • Partner with Human Resources and supervisors to develop, implement, monitor and track recruitment and hiring strategies to attract and retain a diverse workforce that is reflective of student populations, including training for all campus search committees.
  • Ensure broad adoption of college policies and commitments to equity and diversity goals, accountabilities, metrics, activities and accomplishments through program implementation, personal influence and effective communication with all constituencies of the college community. Collaborate with other college departments to create and expand opportunities to encourage and engage marginalized and underserved student, faculty, and staff populations in dialogue, equity and cultural competence.
  • Provide supervision and coaching for the Coordinator of Inclusive Excellence.
  • Assist the Chief Compliance and Fair Practices Officer with the annual Affirmative Action Report; monitor results and advise Human Resources department on potential issues.
  • May serve as Co-chair diversity committee meetings/activities. Provide administrative leadership to the committee.

 

Required Qualifications:
What you must bring to this position?

  • The Chief Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Officer must possess a master’s degree in a related field and a minimum of five years of progressive experience in an organizational leadership position with responsibility for diversity and inclusion initiatives and programs.
  • A proven record of successful leadership in planning, developing, implementing, evaluation and alignment of diversity strategies designed to strengthen and improve an equitable and inclusive learning environment. Specific experience with data analytics and measurement of success is required.
  • Knowledge of national and regional trends in higher education around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws affecting fair employment practices.
  • Demonstrated skills facilitating dialogue with and amongst students, faculty and staff to nurture an environment of inclusiveness collegiality, shared inquiry, shared responsibility and collective accomplishment. Particularly adept at collaborating with others who have varying perceptions of diversity, equity, and inclusion with sensitivity to multicultural variances.
  • Evidence of intentional and strategic relationship oriented consensus building skills to work within and across institutional boundaries to achieve equity and inclusion goals. Demonstrated ability to communicate with empathy, directness, flexibility and responsiveness and work effectively with people with personal experiences, values and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstances.
  • Evidence of in-depth understanding of the nature of organizational behavior and change that is transformative and tactical with regard to delivering tangible results.
  • Demonstrated equity minded and culturally competent leadership and advocacy skills and experiences. Experience in collaborating and providing training that is dynamic, engaging and enlightening.
