Summary

The Human Genome Sequencing Center, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM-HGSC) is seeking to recruit a Research Assistant (RA-II) to work in the Library Group. The BCM-HGSC was founded in 1996 under the leadership of Dr. Richard Gibbs and is a world leader in genomics. The fundamental interests of the BCM-HGSC are in advancing biology and genetics by improved genome technologies. As one of the three large-scale sequencing centers funded by the National Institutes of Health, the BCM-HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work on the cutting edge of genomic science in a state of the art institution.

The Library Construction group is responsible for preparation of samples for sequencing across multiple NextGen sequencing platforms. The position would principally involve DNA and RNA QC, construction of DNA and RNA libraries for Next-Generation sequencing pipelines (Illumina, Ion Torrent and PacBio), sequence capture as well as work with Illumina genotypic arrays. The candidate should be able to work independently and within a team to process samples in the production pipeline, as well as work independently on R & D projects including protocol development and optimization, draft SOPs. Qualified candidates should be good at multi- tasking, problem-solving, and have strong Communication skills. Qualified candidates may be required to supervise and train others to plan, conduct experiments, and work under the direction of the Team Leader and the Senior Manager.

Job Purpose

Performs responsible research work of a complex nature that requires establishing test methods and procedures as well as planning, completing, and occasionally supervising limited research projects in accordance with general plans approved by the supervisor.

Job Duties

•Perform laboratory research projects and production tasks
•Troubleshoot experiments
•Collect, compile, evaluate and analyze data
•Design and conduct research experiments
•Summarize information in an appropriate format, present results in production meetings
•Document experiment results and report to team lead
•Oversee the maintenance of lab equipment and environment.
•DNA and RNA QC
•Real-time PCR, library construction
•Sequence capture and working with genotyping arrays

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
