Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
As a key member of the department, the Psychiatry faculty member will assist the Chair of Primary Care in development of clinical content for systems courses related to the field of Psychiatry with emphasis on the Psychiatry and Behavioral Health systems course. The Psychiatry faculty member is expected to act as a role model for students interested in psychiatry, participate in scholarship and research in the department, provide quality patient care and foster collaboration and interdisciplinary learning. Members of the Department of Primary Care will be expected to participate in teaching in the systems courses, physical exam course, case-based learning sessions, preparation for clerkships, procedural skills training and OSCE’s. The members of the department will also participate in the SHSU practice plan. The individual should be comfortable working in preclinical and clinical education, as well as evaluation of curriculum and students through various learning and assessment methods. The ideal candidate should have strong clinical acumen and promote the specialty to students.
Educational Requirements for the Position
The successful candidate will have a DO or MD degree from an accredited college of medicine with residency training Psychiatry, current board certification or eligibility by the AOA or ABMS, and eligibility for, or a current license to practice in Texas
Experience Required for the Position
A background in medical education is preferred, as is experience in pre-clinical and clinical teaching. Ability to communicate and work with faculty, medical students, clerkship coordinators, hospital administrators, physician preceptors and college administration. Excellent written and verbal communication. Demonstrates personal initiative and abilities to deal with a rapidly changing environment. Familiar with Learning Management Systems and reporting.
Other Requirements for the Position
This position is currently not a tenure track position but is a full-time, permanent position with the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine. Applicants wishing to pursue tenure should address this in their cover letter.
*Note: While SHSU main campus is in Huntsville, TX, this position will reside at the Conroe, TX satellite location.
