Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with nights and weekends required, as necessary.

The sports turf specialist will manage and be responsible for the Rice University campus playing fields including: three grass sports fields; one artificial turf sports field; six grass intramural fields; and the grounds immediately adjacent to both intercollegiate athletics and campus intramural facilities as a critical unit within the larger campus grounds team that creates positive first impressions of our 300-acre tree-lined urban campus while supporting the university’s mission through effective and innovative stewardship of the campus, while pursuing excellence in grounds management, and providing world-class customer service.

Education Required Bachelor's Degree Major/Discipline Substitution for Education Requirement May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis in lieu of the education requirement. Education Preferred

Degree or certificate in agronomy, plant science, horticulture, turfgrass management or an equivalent discipline.

Experience Required 3 years Type of Experience

- Experience with athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces) and other specialized collegiate sport surfaces
- Experience with intercollegiate sports field dimensions and game field layout and marking

Substitution for Experience Requirement Education may not be substituted for the experience requirement. Experience Preferred

- Higher education experience
- Warm-season turfgrass experience

License/Certification Required

Must possess or obtain within six months a pesticide applicator’s license through the Texas Department of Agriculture for the categories to include general standards, lawn and ornamental, and weeds.

License/Certification Preferred

- Professional certification in sports field management or sports turfgrass management
- Irrigation technician certification/license or ability to acquire within six months

Skills Required

- Analytical skills to analyze and track complex space, equipment and financial data
- Interpersonal skills, mature judgment required to interact effectively with a broad range of people, including staff, faculty and vendors, both individually and in groups
- Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects with competing priorities, meet deadlines and project plans with short- and long-term end dates
- Working knowledge of applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project
- Experience working with internal and external vendors and services contracting
- Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency preparedness plans and their implementation; and property administration specific to PO tracking, receiving, and inventory control

Skills Preferred

- Familiarity with FAMIS or other work control software
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Rice students, staff including FE&P and Athletics representatives, athletic fans, donors, and other members of the Rice community.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs several times each day. Requires walking or standing up to eight hours per day. Other physical requirements of the job include bending/crouching/or kneeling, lifting, seeing, reaching, climbing, and balancing.

Working Conditions

Work Environment: Primarily an outdoor work environment which includes exposure to temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain, etc.

Work Hazards: Exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, pollen, noise, and hazardous chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicide, and fertilizer. Some work may occur at heightened elevations on ladders and scaffolding. Work with specialized equipment such as aerators, drags, mowers, sprayers, spreaders as well as hand-held power equipment.

Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.

Essential Functions

- Serves as property operations/maintenance point of contact for facilities’ issues in assigned areas and related facilities
- Leads/manages a staff of 3+ FTEs to produce the expected result required in athletic, rec and other fields/areas
- Handles property administration by troubleshooting, completing tagging, data entry & inventory; requesting purchase orders, receiving; completing record keeping; establishing tracking systems, gathering information, compiling information and making recommendations for space allocation to decision makers
- Implements facility security programs by developing procedures and practices, distributing keys, providing building access, monitoring access records, assessing security infrastructure needs, and changing access schedules
- Completes project coordination with internal and external contacts including co-workers and internal customers
- Serves as a safety management coordinator; developing and conducting safety training and/or new employee facility orientation; and maintains and participates in emergency preparedness, recovery and business continuity coordination
- Coordinates communications services
- Provides updates, alerts, notifications to stakeholders and building occupants
- Oversees delivery and restocking of supplies and equipment per university and department guidelines
- Coordinates space management and planning activities
- Performs all other duties assigned

Additional Functions or Information

- Develops and manages the overall maintenance plan for all campus playing fields including intercollegiate athletics and intramural recreation fields, and the grounds around those facilities within university and department guidelines
- Develops and manages budgets for the athletics and intramural grounds zone operations including maintenance, staffing, supplies and equipment
- Communicates regularly with leadership, program coaches and staff regarding work priorities and scheduling
- Manages grounds-related game day operations for baseball, soccer, and track & field competitions
- May act as a technical adviser or assist project managers with completion of capital projects involving field renovations or assigned areas.
- Develops and implements a replacement plan for all fields including athletic and intramural surfaces
- Develops and manages an equipment repair and replacement plan for the lifetime of the equipment that is used on the intercollegiate athletics fields and intramural fields
- Develops and implements an Integrated Pest Management ( IPM ) program for the control of insects and other pests, plant diseases and weed control within assigned areas according to university and department guidelines
