Job Details

The Department of History and the Department of Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies at Amherst College invite applications for a joint tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in Asian American history, with a focus on gender and sexuality. Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. Forty-five percent of our students identify as domestic students of color, and another 9 percent are international, with non-U.S. citizenship; 14 percent are the first members of their families to attend college. Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student's demonstrated need, and 57 percent of our students receive financial aid. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

We seek candidates with expertise in gender and sexuality. We are defining the field broadly and welcome a wide range of candidates, including but not limited to those specializing in the Americas, the Pacific Islands, comparative race and colonialism, and/or transnationalism.

We are looking for a colleague with strong commitments to scholarship and to teaching a diverse undergraduate student body. The teaching load is two courses per semester. We can imagine a wide array of courses a new hire in this area might offer, in addition to larger introductory surveys of Asian American history and Asian American women's history. Candidates will also be expected to advise senior thesis projects in both departments and to participate in the life of the college.

Candidates must have the Ph.D. in hand or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. Fields can include history; sexuality, women's and gender studies; ethnic studies; American studies; and other related fields.

Send a letter of application, a twenty- to thirty-page sample of writing, and a curriculum vitae to Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/77907. Candidates who progress beyond the initial review will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation, and materials related to teaching. Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2020, and continue until the position is filled. Questions should be directed to Professor Sean Redding, sredding@amherst.edu, in the Department of History, Amherst College, Amherst, MA 01002.

Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.
