NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1) RESEARCH (90%)

The basic qualification for this position is an M.D., Ph.D or equivalent doctorate degree.

The qualified applicant should have a strong background in cardiovascular medicine, specifically in aspects related to the evaluation and management of patients with different types of cardiomyopathy and heart failure and with an emphasis on the creation and application of data science initiatives such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications in medicine.

We are especially interested in candidates who have strong cardiovascular domain science knowledge and experience in research involving multi-dimensional models of cardiovascular disease and knowledge of cardiovascular diseases including pathophysiology, clinical evaluation and management. It is preferred that the applicant also have a background in omics sciences, including genetics, genomics, proteomics or metabolomics and can process clinical knowledge extracted from the electronic health records for the integration with Data Science and Machine Learning analyses and applications.

Skills sets in the area of cardiovascular physiology, data analytics, omics science and crowdsourcing are required. The applicant’s work will focus on the application of data science in cardiovascular physiology and medicine from molecular cellular biology to digital health and epidemiology as it relates to cardiomyopathy and heart failure, working in a highly collaborative environment to develop and design platforms for crowdsourcing gene annotation, clinical and epidemiological data and building a knowledge networks interphase of biomedicine, clinical science and engineering.

The ideal candidate will show strong leadership, teaching, collaboration, writing and organizational skills to play a key role in the development of UC Davis Complex Care Laboratory, mentoring students, promoting teamwork in a diverse multidisciplinary environment, writing scientific manuscripts, overseeing the implementation of clinical translational research and writing grant applications.

Publication
Project Scientist will be in collaboration with the PI, members of the research team or independently will publish research in peer-reviewed journals.

Grant Acquisition
Project Scientist will assist in the preparation of grants applications for funding from federal and industry agencies. Prepare reports, modifications of budgets and other grant components as required by granting agencies.

2) PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his specific field of cardiovascular sciences. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.

3) UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
This category is encouraged but not required. It may be included or omitted at the option of the individual department or other unit. If included, it will be considered a clear expectation for the position, and the candidate will be given due credit for these activities during the review process.)

The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Present scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.
