Organizational Unit Overview
East
Carolina University’s Global Academic Initiatives are virtual
exchange programs that result in direct interaction between ECU
students and international students in existing academic programs
abroad or those planning to enter academic programs in the US. GAI
consists of three components: (1) the network of relationships and
university to university partnerships (Global Partners in
Education); (2) the video and internet technology used to connect
the partners; and (3) the mechanisms for regular interaction among
partners, which includes the Global Understanding course, other
discipline-specific global courses, individual course enhancements,
and co-curricular activities and programs.
Job Duties
The Coordinator of Global
Understanding will primarily be responsible for ensuring the day to
day functioning of the approximately 15–20 Global Understanding
courses offered each semester. Duties will include: coordinate with
GPE partners to schedule, staff, and offer GU courses on their
local campuses; manage ECU sections of Global Understanding
including scheduling, reserving space, and coordinating with
departments and ITCS for staffing; spearhead the development and
dissemination of the master schedule; maintain and deliver training
program for new GU faculty at ECU and abroad; manage unforeseen
performance and scheduling issues; maintain shared resource sites.
In collaboration with the Associate Director of Global affairs, the
Coordinator of Global Understanding will: maintain the GU Core;
develop training programs; assess GU student outcomes; participate
in pilots of new protocols and technologies; manage a team of
faculty and staff at ECU and abroad involved in the GU program;
assist with the development of individualized course enhancements.
The Coordinator of Global Understanding will teach two Global
Understanding classes per semester.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s
degree in one of the following fields: Anthropology, English,
Ethnic Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Foreign Language,
Economics, Sociology, or related field. Excellent intercultural
communication and collaboration skills and experience working
cross-culturally.
Preferred Experience, Skills,
Training/Education
Ph.D. or Ed.D., Experience in
teacher training or professional development. Experience
facilitating virtual exchange.
