Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks to find a long-term substitute teacher to fill two maternity leaves in our second grade for the 2020-21 school year: one for the fall semester and the second for the spring. Both positions are co-teaching.  The Lower School program seeks to foster a love of learning and provide children with a firm grounding in the core academic subjects (reading, writing, social studies and math). It is built around rigorous intellectual exploration and joyful discovery. Students are challenged to think deeply about concepts and ideas, to make learning personal and relevant, to ask questions and to look for broader truths and understanding. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, attention to the “whole child,”  strong differentiation skills, a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, and a strong grounding in best practices. Risk-taking, collaboration, a positive community spirit, and strong communication skills are essential characteristics of the candidate.

Additional responsibilities for all full-time teachers include supporting student wellbeing, partnering with families, assessing and evaluating student progress, providing opportunities for parent education, supporting admissions work, and participating in Meetings for Worship, faculty meetings, duties, and school events. Our community is a collaborative environment, and lead teachers plan with their co-teacher (and other colleagues) to deliver an innovative, thoughtful program. Familiarity with approaches such as  reading and writing workshop and Responsive Classroom is an asset.

A BA degree in Elementary Education (or comparable degree) is required; advanced degrees preferred, along with a minimum of 3 years of successful elementary teaching experience.

Interested applicants should submit a resume, a cover letter explaining how he/she would be a good match for these criteria, and contact information for three professional references via our online application.
