General Position Summary:
Responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various research software. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate user requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs. Using functional specifications and designs, produces all or part of the deliverables. Maintains databases and application system code.

Job Scope/Complexity:

Under limited guidance, responsible for full life-cycle of small to medium sized moderately complex projects. Demonstrates strong ability in technology and/or strong understanding of the business/clinical/education process. Builds and maintains client relationships through positive interactions.

Position Overview:

The Schatz Lab in the Biology Department at Johns Hopkins University is looking for ambitious individuals to fill a programmer analyst position working on the Galaxy and AnVIL projects. Galaxy (https://galaxyproject.org/) is a software framework that (a) enables researchers to store, analyze, visualize and share genomic data and (b) provides genomic tool developers with the ability to deploy their tools within a complete analysis framework. AnVIL project (https://anvilproject.org/) makes Galaxy available in the context of public, protected datasets.

Describe the position’s roles & interactions:

This role is seeking an engaged individual interested in the development of cloud computing-based solutions, container technologies, and DevOps methodologies. . The required tasks will involve building novel systems aimed at deploying Galaxy application and related software to enable researcher to analyze their data. We use modern technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm with the aim of create robust, portable solutions for deploying Galaxy.

Describe the specific systems, applications, projects for which the position is responsible:

The Galaxy project is a popular software project with a world-wide community counting in tens of thousands that provides accessible solutions for biomedical researchers to analyze their data. The applicant will work with the Galaxy application as well as supporting software to ensure suitable operation of the overall system, which is highly distributed and makes use of compute and storage resources from a variety of cloud providers.

Describe scale/size of area, project and/or system supported:

Galaxy was developed in an academic research environment, and members of the Galaxy team work closely with researchers on projects at the leading edge of data­ intensive biological research. Thousands of researchers worldwide use Galaxy on a daily basis. Galaxy is an open source project committed to the openness of scientific enterprise and is free for all.

List required & preferred skills specific to position:

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in computer science or a related field.
  • Three years of related work experience with computer systems and applications required.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience. Fluency in the Python programming language required.
  • Experience with container technologies (eg, Docker, Kubernetes), web-development (e.g. Django, JavaScript), or experience with development of software for scientific research is desirable. Previous experience working with Galaxy and/or tools for analysis of genomic data a significant plus.

Job Responsibilities:

ANALYSIS AND REQUIREMENTS GATHERING

  • Define computer systems architecture for moderately complex research processes related to genomic data analyses by interacting with users to observe and understand current processes and the issues related to those processes. Provide written documentation of findings to share with colleagues.
  • Gather system requirements by meeting with users and researching existing technology to understand the project requirements and possible solutions for new applications.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop detailed tasks and project plans by analyzing project scope and milestones for moderately complex projects in order to ensure product is delivered in a timely fashion according to software lifecycle standards.
  • Write functional/technical specifications by taking the provided moderately complex system requirements and putting them into functional and technical descriptions for use by programmers and business analysts to develop technical solutions.
  • Develop/change data input, files/database structures, data transformation, algorithms, and data output by using appropriate computer language/tools to provide technical solutions for moderately complex application development tasks.
  • Document code and associated processes by adhering to development methodologies, adding code comments and appropriate documentation to various knowledge-base system(s) to simplify code maintenance and to improve support.

TESTING AND DOCUMENTATION

  • Create and document moderately complex test scenarios using the appropriate testing tools to validate and verify application functionality.
  • Test all changes by using the appropriate moderately complex test scenarios to ensure all delivered solutions work as expected and errors are handling in a meaningful way.
  • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references.

IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE

  • Implement changes by adhering to the change management policies and procedures for any given project to communicate to all parties the nature, significance, and risk factors of the solution.
  • Monitor changes and resolve moderately complex problems by responding as they occur, by reviewing all processing and output of the newly implemented solution, and by proactively ensuring the solution works successfully in order to satisfy the customer requirements and to provide a smooth transition to the new solution.
  • Provide support by triaging and resolving moderately complex issues to ensure prompt, effective service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education and additional education may substitute for experience.

Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
