The School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Advisor.

The Academic Advisor position provides academic counseling to a diverse population of undergraduate students in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS). This position is responsible for assisting students in making informed decisions concerning personal, educational, and professional goals leading to graduation from the University of Washington Bothell. This includes an expanded professional practice to provide co-curricular and career counseling, and motivating students to identify and overcome obstacles that may be impeding their success. The Academic Advisor also counsels prospective students considering application to an IAS major.

Responsibilities:

INTEGRATED ACADEMIC ADVISING AND CAREER COUNSELING:
• Develop and maintain advanced expertise about IAS academic programs, university policy, and campus resources. Work independently to manage an assigned caseload of students to ensure their requirements for graduation are properly met.
• Provide academic advising, career counseling, success coaching, and other support services to help students develop an educational plan to achieve their intended learning and career goals. Inform students about procedures for independent study, undergraduate research, study abroad, community-based learning projects, and other experiential learning opportunities.
• Analyze, interpret, and explain student educational records including transcripts, placement results, and transfer credit evaluations. Assist students in making informed educational choices with use of their Degree Audit Report and other planning tools. Recommend appropriate quarterly credit loads and course selections. Assist students with resolution of registration issues.
• Maintain systematic and frequent contact with assigned students. Learn and utilize student success management technologies to monitor and support student retention, persistence, and graduation. Keep accurate, timely, and confidential records of every student interaction and update student educational records.
• Perform regular audits of student records to evaluate degree completion outcomes. Identify, monitor, and support students with academic difficulties. Provide training and coaching in success strategies. Make student referrals to other campus resources when needed.

STUDENT-FOCUSED INITIATIVES & INTERVENTIONS:
• Contribute to, coordinate, and/or lead initiatives that positively impact the educational outcomes for IAS students. Design or revise interventions that scale up student success strategies beyond the one-on-one coaching model. Examples include workshops, advisor-led courses, strengths assessments, learning and support communities, use of technology, research projects, professional development activities, or other events, programs, or tools impacting student success.
• Collect and analyze data to identify the academic and other needs for target student populations, including first-generation, low-income, underrepresented minority, disabled, veteran, immigrant, and international students.
• Identify objectives based on desired performance indicators and educational outcomes for IAS students. Develop an evaluation plan to monitor the progress of student-focused initiatives and interventions toward meeting specific objectives. Generate reports to communicate progress and outcomes to campus and community partners, as appropriate.

PROGRAM PLANNING, DEVELOPMENT, OUTREACH, AND IMPLEMENTATION:
• Support new student orientation and new student program activities by providing information about different programs and options within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences to new students, their families, and their support networks.
• Promote awareness of the value of an interdisciplinary, liberal arts education that enhances the capacities of students, staff, and faculty members to work together across differences, to think critically and creatively on their practices, and to recognize and challenge unequal relations of power.
• Develop strong working relationships with faculty and staff across campus, collaborate as an active member of the campus community, and participate in professional development opportunities as recommended.
• Remain current with student development theories, University of Washington Bothell major and graduation requirements, and with international, national, and statewide higher education trends and student needs through research and professional networks.

Minimum requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Liberal Arts, Ethnic Studies, or a related area.
• Foundational background in student support services, and minimum 2 years of experience in student-facing roles such as academic skills advising, retention counseling (e.g. TRIO Programs), success coaching, career counseling, student mentoring, residence life or student affairs advising, or other similar roles at the college or university level.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

Additional requirements:
• Demonstrated ability to form productive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds, and provide excellent student services in a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen actively, empathize, use reason when dealing with emotional topics, provide reflective feedback, and utilize effective communication skills.
• Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, manage time and resources effectively, develop priorities amid competing and changing projects, and exercise excellent professional judgement and discretion, making decisions on a regular basis that impact student welfare and the institution.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, including attention to detail and documentation, the ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, gather and analyze information competently, be thorough in communication and documentation, and perform effectively in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
• Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various web applications like Google Drive.

Desired:
• Demonstrated knowledge of the educational and professional opportunities available to undergraduate students in the liberal arts and humanities.
• An understanding of identity-conscious student success practices and their impact on retention.
• Experience with and appreciation of a holistic and appreciative approach to advising.
• Experience working with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Conditions of employment:
• This position will have a private office for student appointments, adjacent to other members of the undergraduate advising team.
• The scheduled hours for this position will align with the office hours held by other IAS Undergraduate Advisors, typically Mondays through Fridays from 8 AM to 5 PM.
• This position requires the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for recruitment, orientation, convocation, or commencement events.
