The Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong is inviting applicants for the position of Professor in the field of Sociology. The area of research expertise is open but the successful appointee will have the experience and capability necessary to demonstrate leadership in the discipline of Sociology, broadly defined.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is a leading international institution of higher learning in Asia. The Department of Sociology has a long history of excellence, drawing on an interdisciplinary approach to the study of social issues in Hong Kong, China, and the world. It has a diverse body of teaching faculty, adopting a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, particularly using qualitative and ethnographic methods. It offers undergraduate majors in Sociology, Criminology, and Media and Cultural Studies. In addition to research postgraduate degrees, it also offers two taught postgraduate programmes in Criminology and Media, Culture, and Creative Cities. The Department of Sociology sits within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong. The Faculty has identified three broad research clusters, consisting of (1) Contemporary China: Social, political, and spatial transformation; (2) Cities 2050: Urbanisation, sustainability, and mobility; and (3) Mental Wellness: From brain to society. In addition, the Faculty values diverse research methodologies. The Faculty is particularly committed to upgrading our expertise in quantitative methods, and welcome applicants with relevant expertise.

Position Description

We seek a scholar of the highest academic credentials who has a commitment to building a leading research and teaching program at HKU. The appointee will be expected to demonstrate an outstanding record of research and other achievements, and evidence of influence within the discipline. She/he should have a record of successful research postgraduate student supervision, and strong classroom teaching skills. As a Professor, it is expected that the appointee will contribute to leadership in the Department and Faculty, and be prepared to serve as Head of Department if called upon in the future.

It is expected that the appointment as Professor will be made on tenure terms, although it may be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure upon satisfactory completion of a second fixed-term contract.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. An appointment on fixed terms will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. A tenured appointment will see a 15% University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
