Program Director – Master of Public Safety (MPS)

 

The University of Virginia School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) seeks applications for a Program Director – Master of Public Safety (MPS) to join their team. This is a twelve-month Assistant Professor, Academic General Faculty (Tenure-Ineligible) position. SCPS helps working adults finish their degrees and advance their careers. SCPS offers online and in-person programs, bringing high-quality, accessible, and affordable education to all Virginians.

 

The Master of Public Safety is a new degree program offered entirely online. Twenty-First Century Policing will require public safety leaders and organizations to prevent and respond to a widening array of natural and human-made challenges that continue to evolve in complexity and scope. They must keep pace with changing laws, community norms and demographics, and technological advances. This program will develop public safety leaders by instilling and modeling the values of service, citizenship and leadership; providing an innovative and interdisciplinary course of study that allows students to think analytically and creatively in making lawful, effective decisions; and educating students on the necessary tools and knowledge to address public safety issues, reduce crime and promote public trust. The program aims to draw on UVA's role as a public university to serve broad societal and civic needs and prepare leaders to address the nation's longstanding and emerging public safety challenges.

 

MINIMUM Job Duties Include:

  • Academic Responsibilities: Responsible for graduate level program and course curriculum development and delivery for part-time adult learners in an online environment. Provides highly effective instruction, class management and a vibrant, challenging and engaging academic experience for students. Typical teaching load is seven (7) 3-credit hour courses per year (Fall, Spring and Summer terms.) Responsible for program assessment and student learner outcomes.   Serves as subject matter expert for Public Safety and remains current in the academic discipline.
  • Administrative Responsibilities: Responsible for academic compliance requirements, program budget and enrollment. Develops admission criteria for applicants. Participates in admissions process and student recruitment. Recruits and evaluates faculty wage instructors and subject matter experts. Establishes course schedule and assignment of faculty wage instructors.
  • Service: Fosters positive and productive academic and professional collaborations within SCPS, UVA, and partner organizations, such as the FBI, in order to advance the MPS program and other School programs. Participates in School and/or UVA committees, workgroups, and activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A doctorate degree (JD, PhD) from an accredited institution in criminal justice or related field.

 

Required Experience:

  • 3 years of higher education teaching experience in public safety or a related field
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Commitment to nontraditional education for adult students
  • Experience teaching online
  • Willingness to learn and stay current with teaching strategies and technologies
  • 3 years professional experience in public safety or a related field

 

Preferred:              

  • 5 years of higher education teaching experience in public safety or a related field
  • Proficiency using Canvas or related LMS
  • 5 years professional experience in public safety or a related field
  • Relevant industry certifications and/or professional memberships

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have a passion for serving adult learners and how education can transform lives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, excellence in customer service and be able to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  •  Must have the ability to work under deadlines, to adapt to changing priorities and needs, and to assume other duties as assigned.
  • Strong customer service orientation, relationship-building skills, and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage multiple stakeholders within SCPS and across the University to accomplish cross-functional initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially with students, faculty, administrators and support personnel.

 

The preferred location for this position is Charlottesville, Virginia; remote workplace may be considered. If remote workplace is approved, regular trips to Charlottesville, Virginia will be required.

 

This position may require some travel, primarily day trips within the Commonwealth, but occasional overnight travel may be required.

 

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
