Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Belonging, School of Law


The Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Belonging is a newly created position reporting directly to the Dean. As the chief diversity officer of the Law School, the Assistant Dean will be responsible for strengthening and advancing the Law School’s commitment to being a diverse and equitable institution in which every member feels an equal sense of belonging. The Assistant Dean will work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and senior leadership to support ongoing activities across the Law School. They will also identify, recommend, and lead the development of new and innovative Law School initiatives across all areas of Law School planning and operations. The Assistant Dean will develop tracking measures for the Law School’s diversity, equity, and belonging goals, and be responsible for monitoring and reporting on progress.


A diversity champion, the Assistant Dean will serve as a strategic thinker, an advisor, and an implementer. Specific areas of responsibility will include:

  • Chair the Law School’s committee on diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Cultivate and support diversity, equity, and belonging programming of the Law School, including sharing ideas, information, and opportunities to support diversity, equity and belonging with the Dean and other senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with the admissions, graduate studies, and financial aid offices on student recruitment and success and the development of pipeline programs, and engage directly with prospective and current students.
  • Collaborate with Law School student services offices to support students from communities historically underrepresented at the Law School and in the legal profession.
  • Mentor and support student organizations and affinity groups.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff to enrich diversity, equity, and belonging efforts in our curriculum, classrooms, clinics, experiential courses, and programs.
  • Work together with the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Administration, the Vice Dean and other leadership to promote and nurture diversity, equity, and belonging in faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and support.
  • Collaborate with and support the Law School Foundation’s engagement with diverse graduates of the Law School.
  • Serve as the Law School’s partner with the University’s Inclusive Excellence framework
  • Serve as a liaison and Law School representative to diversity officers and groups at the University, other law schools, and national and local organizations on matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion.



  • Advanced degree required; J.D. or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of legal practice, higher education or consulting experience, with substantial relevant experience working in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in a law school or legal practice strongly preferred.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with diverse stakeholders in a higher education community, including faculty, staff, students, and program graduates.
  • Demonstrated ability to convey complex issues and objectives clearly and plainly, orally and in writing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks independently; ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact.
  • Familiarity with relevant federal and state legal frameworks surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion issues.
