Associate Director of Marketing & Communications

General Description:

This position is within the JHU School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Office of Marketing and Communications which leads external marketing and communications initiatives to advance the school’s global reputation as a leader in the field of international relations. This includes brand awareness, media relations, website, social media, marketing, and high-level event promotion. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Marketing, this position works across the entire Marketing and Communications department and the school. The position is responsible for helping to develop and implement the school’s communications and marketing strategies.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities of the Job:

Marketing - (40%)

  • Aid in the development of editorial direction, content, design, production and distribution of all marketing collateral including advertisements, brochures, and other publications as appropriate.
  • Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate with internal stakeholders across the school's three campuses in from Washington, DC, SAIS Europe, and the Hopkins-Nanjing Center on all relevant marketing products to ensure articulation of value propositions, marketing objectives, and unified messaging in support of key priorities.
  • Aid in the management and measurement of the effectiveness of contractual relationships in areas such as web development, content creation, graphic design, online marketing, and advertising placement.
  • Develop and assess measurable marketing goals and objectives that advance the strategic mission of the school.
  • Serve as in-house graphic designer for small scale design needs.

Communications – (30%)

  • Liaise, collaborate, and coordinate with internal stakeholders across campuses on all relevant communications efforts, to include school events, conferences, and other official activities.
  • Periodically support media relations efforts.
  • Write, edit, coordinate, and advise on announcements and messaging for internal stakeholders.

Web and Digital Presence - (20%)

  • Support efforts to build a cutting-edge digital marketing presence to engage prospective students including digital advertising, social media marketing, and email marketing campaigns.
  • Assist in establishing a strategy to ensure best practices of digital advertising metrics and search engine optimization.
  • Ensure digital presence communicates clear, concise and consistent messaging in support of school’s strategic priorities.
  • Develop reporting mechanism to measure and analyze campaign performance.

Planning and Budgeting - (10%)

  • Aid in the development and management of strategic planning efforts, financial and budget-related goals, and evaluation systems for the office.
  • Develop, monitor, and evaluate performance of short- and long-term policies and plans for the marketing/communications/public relations of academic programs to ensure the quality and integrity of the Johns Hopkins SAIS brand.
  • Manage relationship with external vendors on a project by project basis
  • Identify and engage in appropriate staff development opportunities.
  • Prioritize and direct work efforts and provide guidance and direction to junior staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related area required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of related professional experience required. Five years of experience preferred. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in marketing, social media and the new media communication environments.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the workings of a communications office (media relations, special events planning and publicity, publications development, social media, web/multimedia content development and marketing/advertising), and preferably, international affairs.
  • Experience in digital marketing including planning campaigns, message development, analyzing metrics, and identifying trends.
  • Able to formulate new strategies and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Able to coordinate and implement ongoing marketing strategies.
  • Able to manage project deadlines and deliverables and multitask on a variety of projects. Able to interact effectively with and direct external vendors.
  • Graphic design experience including knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Higher education marketing experience helpful, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce or other CRMs desired.
  • Working knowledge of Drupal or other website CMS systems.
  • Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Style standards for writing and editing.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
